MilkTape: $ 15 For 128MB USB Drive Disguised As A Cassette Tape

Johnny looked Amanda in the eye. They had actually only been dating for a couple of weeks, but in a summer time love, merely prior to heading back to college, weeks seemed like for good. And yet, were still never ever enough.
He nervously patted down his very own pockets, as if he had actually forgotten something, then sighed with relief when he felt the cassette tape secure in the breast pocket of his flannel shirt.
Her iPhone buzzed. It was her mother, but she neglected the phone call and instead reacted with a quick text. She handed him one of her earbuds and turned to the Music application prior to playing “ Call Me Maybe, ” bopping along to the beat.
It was the best moment, he thought, and positioned the cassette tape in her hand, the exact same one he had actually been holding.
“ Oh my god! Did you make me a mix tape? ” she squealed. Her name was written on the tape, and a list of fifteen songs had been sloppily jotted down on the paper case cover that had come with it. “ I don ’ t even know exactly how I ’ m going to hear this. Do you have a tape user? ”
“ You don ’ t need one. ” Johnny smiled before taking the situation from her hand and removing the tape. He hooked his fingernail on a little USB key, that swung from the cassette tape on a hinge. “ You have your laptop computer with you, right? ”
“ Merely my pop ’ s COMPUTER, ” she said. “ My MacBook is at the Genius bar. ”
“ That ’ s ok. MilkTape tackles both. ”
She plugged it in, somewhat bummed that it wasn ’ t a genuine mix tape, but she hid that from Johnny. On the bright side, she thought, he can give me way more tunes with a USB than a cassette.
She opened the drive and browsed through a listing of 15 tracks, before coming to be rapidly let down. And it showed on her face.
“ Exactly what ’ s wrong? ” Johnny pleaded. “ You don ’ t like the songs? I just placed Gotye on there because I know you like the track, not due to the fact that you ’ re someone that I made use of to understand. ”
“ Six megabytes continuing to be? Actually? ” She raged. “ Exactly how much did you pay for this? It ’ s an attractive thought, however if you invested more than a couple bucks on this … ”
“ It was $ 15, ” he stated, head bowed.
“ Did they are available in a pack? ”
He shook his head.
“ I mean, you can get a 16 gigabyte flash drive for $ 10. I suspect I merely don ’ t recognize why you invested so much for 15 songs. ”
Amanda closed the laptop.
“ I can have gotten a 4GB flash drive for $ 5, and that would still hold a thousand songs, ” he answered. “ The point of limited storage space is that I need to pick carefully. You know, like they did in the old days? With cassette tapes. ”
“ I guess that ’ s kind of cute, ” she stated, snuggling up to him once again. “ However when I make you one I ’ m just going to place it on Spotify, ok? ”

Those of our readers old enough to remember the 90s will almost certainly recall cassette tapes fondly. The clacky little tapes and their creaky cases have more or less disappeared from the world, and no surprise: they were fragile, limited, and sounded pretty bad.
But they were also hugely empowering, and helped produce in an age of comparative consumer powerlessness the same feeling we take for granted today: that we should be able to copy, lend, and duplicate the content we’ve bought. Cassette is a documentary looking for a few bucks on Kickstarter that hopes to highlight cassette culture then and now.
Here’s the trailer:
Interestingly, the format appears to be having a minor renaissance: the manufacturer in the trailer describes a lull as CDs take over, but slowly his business returned. And elsewhere in the world, tapes are understandably more practical than CDs, MP3s, or vinyl.
Personally I think it’s a very interesting topic, though I hope they take a little time to look at the other tape-based devices that have been prominent: minidiscs, reel-to-reel, 8-track. Their failure as consumer items is part of the story as well. And more than other formats, the success and legacy of the cassette has as much to do with culture as it does with business or technology.
So far they’ve raised just under $ 8000 and are hoping to hit $ 25K. That’s pretty reasonable if it’s a feature doc and they already have their equipment. Unfortunately their deadline is coming up just in a couple days – but it’s making the rounds and if they don’t get their Kickstarter debut, maybe they’ll find the funding another way.
