Potential Dell bidding war afoot as Blackstone Group and Carl Icahn reportedly making offers
Idea that Dell get out was a done bargain? Well, the Blackstone Group and investor Carl Icahn plainly do not think so, with the Wall Road Diary reporting that both have gotten in touch with the committee of Dell’s board just before Friday’s shutoff deadline. The would-be bidders are reported to be working on their real offer quantities, and at the same time getting them 4 more days thinking time. Reuters states that Blackstone’s tentative offer is already in, according to sources, and at this time the business is yet to comment. Regardless of a recent downturn in revenues, Michael Dell surprised lots of when he announced his purpose to buy back the eponymous firm in a handle Microsoft for $ 24.4 billion. So, if the creator thought he had the keys to the old estate back, he may just have to wait a bit longer.

Happy Carl Sagan Day (He Would Have Been 78 Today)

Happy Carl Sagan Day. It’s his birthday — he would have been 78 today. So go read ‘Cosmos’. Then watch the TV series. Then go read and watch ‘Contact’ (the movie with Jodie Foster). Or just read the quote above, ‘The Pale Blue Dot’, in reference to the photo Voyager 1 took of earth from 3.7-billion miles away, at Sagan’s request. Dammit, can we please just hold hands and sing Kumbaya and forget all our differences? For Carl?
Thanks to everyone who sent this, cosmos at the bar for everybody! Except me, I don’t drink pink drinks (yes I do too I love them!).

‘Flatland’ redux: watch Carl Sagan explain the science of ‘Fez’

The plot of Fez begins when a two-dimensional character living in a two-dimensional world suddenly realizes that just beyond his perception lies a third dimension, filled with unexplored wonders and mystery. While it may have lacked the elegant mechanics, devious puzzles and brilliant audiovisual style of the video game, a 19th Century text by Edwin Abbott presented a story and world that is in many ways similar — a kind of spiritual prequel to the transdimensional tale dreamed up by Polytron.
This text was Flatland, a romantic satire written by Abbott in 1884 as a critique of the rigid, class-based social structure of Victorian England. Using geometric figures of varying complexity to represent different members of the Victorian…

Carl Icahn In Talks With Motorola About Its Massive Patent Portfolio
In the land of mobile, patents have never been more crucial. He with the most patents has the most power. Period. In the last few months alone we’ve seen Apple and Samsung duke it out, Apple and HTC take it to the mat, Google chat it up with InterDigital, and I won’t even start on Nortel.
Billionaire investor Carl Icahn — notorious for pumping money into companies and then bossing them around — has taken quite the interest in Motorola Mobility’s patent portfolio. With over 17,000 wireless-related patents and 7,500 pending, Motorola has quite the little treasure in its chest, and Icahn wants the company to leverage it in the best way possible.
According to a stock market filing, Icahn held meetings with Motorola asking (or perhaps telling) the company to “explore alternatives regarding its patent portfolio to enhance shareholder value.” Motorola’s portfolio puts Nortel’s $ 4.5 billion patent trove to to shame in terms of size, and also includes many valuable patents concerning 4G technology. The company would stand to gain billions off of a sale, although the consequences of such action may be more costly than profitable.
With patents you have two choices: 1) Sell big, and get rich quick or 2) Use ‘em. License ‘em. And see a steady cash flow. In just about every case, holding on to your portfolio and either licensing patents or bringing lawsuits against violating competitors is the best bet. In fact, the only reason Nortel sold in the first place was because in the long term, bankruptcy would keep the company from having to ever pay licensing fees.
After meetings with Icahn, Motorola never actually took a sale off the table. However, the company did mention that the 22 percent increase in revenue had a lot to do with Motorola’s beefy patent collection.

New Carl Zeiss Lenses Are So Nice, They Come In Their Own Briefcase

Carl Zeiss just announced a bundle of prime lenses for both Canon and Nikon DSLRs. The bundle includes five prime lenses ranging from a 21mm f2.8 to a 85mm f1.4. All the lenses fit conveniently in a waterproof case, custom fitted for the lenses. These would be great for filmmakers and photographers or anyone with a spare $ 6000 lying around.
Press Release
Attractive offer for filmmakers and filming photographers in entry-level HD video segment
OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 05.04.2011. During the NAB Show in Las Vegas from April 9-14, 2011, Carl Zeiss will introduce an attractive bundled lens set offer for its SLR lenses. The set contains the following lenses with F (ZF.2) or EF bayonet (ZE): Distagon T* 2,8/21, Distagon T* 2/28, Distagon T* 2/35, Planar T* 1,4/50 and Planar T* 1,4/85. This offer is a response to the strong demand from the HD Video segment for lenses with precise manual focus. With this offer Carl Zeiss supports filmmakers and still photographers entering the booming HD video market with the right equipment that meets their needs.
“Many production budgets don’t justify investing in a set of cinematography lenses right away, like our Compact Prime CP.2 lenses. Our SLR lenses with their precise manual focus are a reasonable alternative for getting started in HD video,†said Michael Schiehlen, Director of Sales for the Camera Lens Division of Carl Zeiss AG. Schiehlen stressed the benefit of these lenses for videography over lenses with autofocus. “Our SLR lenses feature an outstanding manual focus mechanism, so the precision when focusing is far higher than with a manually operated auto-focus.†In addition, SLR lenses by Carl Zeiss are robust, offer a high aperture speed, and feature an especially harmonious rendering of the bokeh (the out-of-focus area).
The five lenses come in a special waterproof case (IP67), custom-made for this set and feature openings for six lenses. As common for photography lenses, each Carl Zeiss SLR lens has a different size and weight. Therefore a special inlay ensures that each lens fits perfectly inside the suitcase and protects the lenses from shock and vibration. The new SLR lens set will be offered at a recommended retail price of €4562 ($ 6063), excluding VAT, and will be available starting May.

Carl Zeiss To Start Making Micro 4/3 Lenses

Our brothers at HuffPOL/Engadget snagged this press release announcing that Carl Zeiss, lensmaker to the stars, will start selling M4/3 lenses in the near future. Note the release does not describe any particular lens but instead promises to start building in the format over the next few years and that they are now part of the Micro Four Thirds System group, a set of companies dedicated to the format.
Why is this important? Well, to begin with, Carl Zeiss is the beginning and end when it comes to high-end lenses. By putting their might behind the new standard, it proves that M4/3 is, at the very least, a respected format. As a convert, I’m excited to see where these cameras are headed in the next few years, especially once the big boys like Canon and Nikon finally accept the inevitable and join the party.
Announced jointly by Olympus Imaging Corp. (President : Masaharu Okubo) and Panasonic Corporation in 2008, the Micro Four Thirds System standard has rapidly grown in popularity. Now, support for the standard is expanding with the decision of Carl Zeiss AG to join the Micro Four Thirds System standard, and the company is releasing lenses compliant with the standard.
For more than 160 years, the lenses of Carl Zeiss AG have been defining the state-of-the-art in optical technology. Now, as Carl Zeiss AG joins the Micro Four Thirds System group, ZEISS HD Video lenses will be available to users of Micro Four Thirds cameras, contributing to a vastly expanded product line and enhancing the joys of digital imaging with the Micro Four Thirds System.
As the originator of the Four Thirds System and Micro Four Thirds System standards, Olympus Imaging Corp. will continue to develop and enhance the product lineup for both standards to meet the diverse needs of our customers.
Carl Zeiss AG
A long-established optical systems manufacturer based in Germany, founded in 1846 by Carl Zeiss. It develops and manufactures a large variety of optical products such as astronomical telescopes, microscopes, eyeglasses and optical sight devices as well as high-class camera lenses.

Outline of the Micro Four Thirds System standard
The Micro Four Thirds System standard was designed and developed to maximize the performance potential of digital imaging technology, and to extend the benefits of the Four Thirds System standard for digital camera systems.
When compared to the Four Thirds System standard, the primary distinguishing features of the Micro Four Thirds System standard are:
Approximately 50% shorter flangeback distance (mount-to-sensor distance)
Lens mount outer diameter approximately 6mm smaller
Electrical contacts in mount increased from 9 to 11
* Image sensor diagonal dimensions are the same for both Four Thirds System and Micro Four Thirds System standards.
The Micro Four Thirds System standard enables users to enjoy the same high image quality of the Four Thirds System’s 4/3-type image sensor in a much more compact body, and also take advantage of significantly more compact lenses, particularly in the wide-angle and high-power zoom range. The Four Thirds System standard offers the benefits of compact, lightweight performance, and the new Micro Four Thirds System standard takes this still further to enable development of ultra-compact interchangeable lens type digital camera systems unlike anything seen before. The new Micro Four Thirds System standard also incorporates a greater number of lens-mount electrical contacts for the support of new features and expanded system functionality in the future.
