Outlook.com calendar finally gets a refreshed look and new features this week

Microsoft has long promised a calendar upgrade for its Outlook.com email service would be “coming soon,” but the company is finally detailing its plans today. Microsoft will begin rolling out an updated version of its calendar for Outlook.com this week, with some improved features. One click access to event creation will be available, along with improved sharing options.
The new look and feel aligns the calendar with Microsoft’s mail and contact options in Outlook.com, and looks familiar to the Windows Phone and Windows 8 versions. There are month, week, day, and agenda views, alongside access to tasks. Skype, LinkedIn, and Facebook can be integrated into the calendar along with birthday information, weather forecasts, and holidays….

Despite all my hoping and praying, the world isn’t going to end on December 21st. Or at least it wasn’t going to until the scientists at CERN decided to test the Large Hadron Collider that day! *breaking out party hats and noise makers* Apocalypse party!
Scientists at CERN have announced test dates for the rest of the year, as well as some curious dates can be found in the upcoming schedule. Starting Monday, December 17, 2012 and going through Friday, December 21, 2012, CERN will be launching and running a series of collisions, which are predicted to break records in high voltage collisions already set by the LHC. With these experiments, the scientists are hoping to create atomic reactions that would provide further information about anti-matter, and the big bang.
Hell yeah, the end of the world! It’s just like that R.E.M. song. “It’s The End of the World?” What? No — Losing My Religion. Get your head in the game, brobro.

Last year’s rollout of a refreshed UI across Google’s essential suite of web apps proved that the company isn’t afraid to experiment with design. Now, a group of Russian designers have offered up a video containing some additional changes they’d like to see at some point in the future. Titled “Google New Features,” at first glance the YouTube clip almost looks like it came directly from the folks in Mountain View, focusing on usability upgrades to Calendar, Maps, and Contacts. Microsoft has started to update a range of its core Windows 8 communications applications ahead of the Release Preview debut next month. The updates, available in the latest internal builds of Windows 8, include UI improvements, new features, and drop the “app preview” banner from the top of the application. Windows Phone 7.5 gets multiple Google Calendar sync, additional Gmail features

Google’s improved how its calendar and email services interact with Windows Phones running the Mango update. Users can now cram up to 25 different calendars into the Metro OS’s built-in calendar app. The setup’s not exactly seamless; you need to navigate your Windows Phone to the Google Sync page, login and check the boxes found there. While testing on our phones, although one device was able to immediately sync, the other couldn’t pick up on our multiple calendars. We had to delete and re-assign our Google account to the phone in order to get it working. However, once we did, the Metro styling lent itself well to multiple calendar listings, with the ability (like the web-based Google Calendar) to assign colors to each.
At the same Google Sync page, you can now choose to enable the “send mail as” feature if you’re using multiple addresses, with the option to delete unwanted emails instead of archiving. However, aside from replying from the same address that you received emails to, we haven’t discovered a way to assign new mails to our multiple guises. We were able to send messages through our own Engadget mail account, although that’s then used on all future missives. Despite these rough edges, it remains a welcome bit of extra functionality. Are we still longing for a dedicated Gmail app? Definitely. We just hope those devs don’t drop the ball.
