TiVo’s mobile apps have so far been limited to those who use the company’s DVRs, but that audience is about to get much larger. The company has just launched a “powered by TiVo” program that will bring the apps’ Live Guide and content searching to cable TV providers, whether or not there’s a TiVo box attached. While those with generic hardware will miss a large chunk of the original experience, the features are the same underneath — recording and remote control are still around for the TiVo faithful. Atlantic Broadband will be the first to deploy a customized app in tandem with TiVo hardware in the fall, and we wouldn’t be surprised if others follow suit.

No matter how many 4K TVs hit shelves, without native content their appeal will likely remain limited. Samsung and LG are working to change that, at least in their home country, by announcing a memorandum of understanding with five Korean cable operators (Hyundai HCN, CJ HelloVision, C&M, CMB, and T-Broad) to boost 4K TV broadcasts. We could see both live and on-demand 4K programming by the end of this year or early next year, made available via apps on smart TVs and streamed through South Korea’s abundant high speed internet connections. Still not enough resolution for you? Just last week, Japan’s NHK showed off the first 8K Super Hi-Vision narrative film at the Cannes Film Festival. We’ll let you know when all of these developments add up to Ultra HDTV content viewable in your neck of the woods, but for now early adopters will have to make do with mostly upscaled content like Sony’s Mastered in 4K 1080p Blu-ray discs.

You can’t always be camped out in front of your TV for the big soccer (or “footie”) match. Thankfully, beIN Sport is hopping on the streaming bandwagon and, starting today, will offer 24/7 access on both PCs and mobile phones though Play. Of course, like many of these properties making the leap from TV to the web, beIN Sport Play requires that you have an active subscription through a cable or satellite provider. At first only Time Warner and Bright House subscribers will have access, though other networks will come online over the next few months. Play will also offer unique features such as email alerts 30 minutes before the beginning of an event and the ability to watch alternative streams and un-broadcast matches. Now, if only beIN could convince Americans to care about soccer in the first place…
