Ultra-Realistic Ripley Bust Sculpture From ‘Aliens’

This is a realer-than-real sculpture of Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) from the original ‘Alien’. It was sculpted (cast) by Steve Scotts out of silicon and a big box of SICK TALENT. I actually had to go back and look at all the in-process shots to make sure it was real. AND IT IS. The bulge in my pants? That’s a Snickers bar.

Nokia reportedly scraps Meltemi, decides it’s Series 40 or bust in basic phones

O Meltemi, we hardly knew ye. In fact, we didn’t know ye much at all, since Nokia never made the OS official. Nonetheless, claimed insiders have told AllThingsD that the reputed Linux-running alternative to S30 and S40 won’t ever see the light of day. Nokia’s deep structural cuts are to blame, and we imagine Nokia’s previous drive to whittle down its OS portfolio will have come into play. CEO Stephen Elop and other executives never directly acknowledged Meltemi’s existence during the cutback-related conference call, although Elop did admit that some projects were screeching to a halt behind the scenes — possibly the closest Espoo will come to saying that the platform was ever real. Sad, to be sure, but between the new Asha Touch line and ever-cheaper Lumia models, we’re not too worried about whether or not Nokia has the low end covered.

SIDESHOW COLLECTIBLES: Stan Winston Studios and Sideshow Collectibles have once again joined forces to transform one of Hollywood’s most memorable monsters into a life-size collectible. John Rosengrant, a 20-year-plus veteran at SWS, developed the life-size Alien Warrior bust with Stan Winston’s guidance. John and his team started with the original film molds of the Alien Warriors from the film Aliens. This is the first time that the xenomorph from Aliens has been crafted as a life-size collectible, and the team worked diligently to recreate the Aliens version of the warrior. The finished bust is roughly 3 feet long, and nearly 2 feet tall, and complete with partial shoulders. The menacing alien visage is eerily life-like and detailed, a perfect reproduction of the life form that Stan Winston Studios evolved from Giger’s original industrial-organic design. Each bust is hand cast, with a mixture of polystone and fiberglass parts, all hand finished with the Alien’s signature wet and glossy appearance. There is a wealth of paint detail beneath the seemingly black surface, beautiful to behold, but don’t get too close to this deadly bust. If you had any misconceptions about the noble pirates fighting the nasty, dirty MPAA, put those to rest now. Here’s the inside of a pirate’s lair in Budapest where we find a 70TB disk array (the article claims it held “5000 movies, 4000 songs, 6000 games and 500 pieces of software,” which is a ridiculously low number), blow, and what appears to be a shotgun.
A pirate group called CiNEDUB has single-handedly “forced” Warner Brothers to stop releasing films in Hungary for fear of having their content recorded and pirated on the day of release. Sick of CiNEDUB preventing them access to the ouvre of Harry Potter, the police busted the ring and found a large server room, lots of cash, and a mirror and razor blade combo that suggests some high times.
The bust happened under pressure from the Hungarian National Tax and Customs Administration. Two members of the nine member team are behind bars while the rest are still at large. From Torrentfreak:
“Most of this team were responsible for the great American filmmakers blacklisting Hungary,” NAV said in a statement.
Say what you want about freedom and digital rights: these guys were, in the end, making money on pirated video. I don’t like corporations pressuring governments to do their bidding and I agree that it’s stupid to equate piracy with terrorism and gangsterism, you can’t honestly say that whatever these guys were doing in that cocaine- and shotgun-infested flat improved our digital freedoms one iota.
