Open-mesh PC case keeps heat, dust bunnies at bay

If you haven’t done it in a while, opening your PC case can be like a slasher flick — you know you’ll see something disgusting, but you’re never sure what. Taiwan’s YoungYear Electronics claims to stop the horror with its Green Mesh case, which has neither fans to suck dust, nor filters, and keeps your components cool with a “chimney effect” instead. It’s this same action that repels dust out the top, so that only one quarter the usual amount of filth is drawn in — according to the company. The only downside is that with poor heat dissipation, the maximum power supply unit size is 300 watts — which probably scratches it off the list for most modders or power-users. For the rest, if you don’t mind your computer’s innards blowing in the breeze, at least you’d have no nasty case-opening frights.

3D fog projection display brings purple bunnies to life, just in time to lay chocolate eggs (video)

3D fog projection display brings purple bunnies to life, just in time to lay chocolate eggs (video)

Fog projectors have been around for ages, but projecting a 2D image onto a wavy field of 3D smoke doesn’t exactly result in the most immersive experience ever. This system from a team at Osaka University is different, relying on three pico projectors all focused on a single column of steam that, as far as we can tell, is dropped down through a slew of multicolored drinking straws. Each projector has a slightly different perspective of the violet hare in question and, as you move about, the fog acts like a parallax barrier, only showing one angle at a time. With a few more projectors and a whole lot more fog the could be even greater. The bunnies, they would be majestic.

NICT’s fVisiOn makes you see immaterial bunnies (video)

Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) has been chasing holographic damsels in distress for as long as we can remember, and honestly, the technology’s still not quite there, but the team that brought us the gCubik has managed to create a low-res 3D hologram table that impresses anyhow. Using an twist on the famous optical illusion toys that use convex mirrors to make objects appear to float in the air, NICT hits a specially-designed optical filter cone with the light from 96 pico projectors. The result is a series of familiar-looking rabbits, teapots and the occasional rubber duck standing five centimeters high and visible through 120 degrees, a good sight better than the two-degree radius afforded them by the original technology. The best part is there’s no case enclosing these creations, unlike competing ideas, so we’ll eventually see 360-degree tables where your fingers can frolic alongside the ethereal leporidae. Watch the lead researcher demo a prototype after the break.

Neato XV-11 ships out next month, will assassinate dust bunnies for money

Let’s face it, a geek’s solution to keeping floors clean will typically involve either family members, robots, or a combination of both. For the latter two groups, we’ve got news that Neato’s XV-11 is all set to start shipping this week, with retail and expanded online availability by mid-July. The XV-11′s biggest selling point is a laser-based room mapping system that will theoretically allow it to avoid objects other robo vacuums would detect only by impact. That should also deliver more efficient route planning for the little sucker, while the saved up energy will be channeled into what Neato claims is “the world’s most powerful robotic vacuum system.” Whether such brazen claims are enough to merit your $399, we leave up to you. Sure looks like a mean machine, though.
