Nokia Xpress Now browser brings content discovery to Asha phones, in beta now
Nokia took to its blog today to introduce Xpress Now, an enhanced version of its Xpress browser. Made for Asha devices, the web app delivers personalized content suggestions based both on your personal preferences and those of the browser’s “more than 80 million monthly users.” These new recommendations come courtesy of three separate browsers views: What’s Hot, You May Also like and Most Liked. The categories are largely self-explanatory, and we imagine suggested content will be more spot-on after the app has been around for a few months. For the time being, though, Nokia Xpress Now is in beta in India, and it should make its away to other countries later in 2013.

Google increases Chrome’s security, singles out shady browser extensions
We know Google isn’t afraid to make it rain for the sake of Chrome’s security, but today’s provisions appear to be an inside job. Laying the smack down on toxic browser extensions, the company introduced a new set of security measures that label applications in violation of its safety guidelines as malware. These potential threats try to bypass the browser’s silent installation blockers by manipulating its management settings. Once installed, the malicious software is enabled by default and cannot be removed or disabled from within Chrome. Google cautions that within a week people will begin seeing download alerts when attempting to install an identified threat. In the meantime, we suggest you start making plans to check out your current extensions just to be sure your setup has a clean bill of health.

Opera browser beta for Android hits Play store with WebKit horsepower
Opera browser made a seismic change when it dropped its long-in-the-tooth Presto engine in favor of WebKit, and now you can see the changes for yourself. It’s up for grabs in beta on Google Play, loading the exact same rendering engine as its Chrome and Safari equivalents together with a handful of extra attributes. Those consist of an updated rate dial page for simpler launching of preferred websites, off-road mode to conserve information, a find tab and HTML5 support. We have not seen it yet on iOS and there’s no date for a last release, so keep in mind you’ll be test-piloting the still-beta Android app. Examine the source to get it.

Chromebook app launcher coming to future releases of Chrome browser

Google is set to bundle its Chrome OS app launcher with future versions of its browser for Windows, OS X, and Linux. A dev channel version of Chrome released yesterday features the app launcher, which lets you run Chrome apps without launching your browser. The apps work offline and have access to a wider range of APIs than regular web apps. Google says you’ll have the same experience as Chromebook users via the app launcher, with available applications including offline versions of Google Drive and Gmail.
At present, the feature is only available to users willing to try out the developer version of the Windows Chrome browser, but Google says it’ll launch on the OS X and Linux dev channels shortly, and we assume it’ll come to the…

Mozilla Firefox Windows 8 style browser released (hands-on)

Mozilla originally showed off its Metro style Firefox browser for Windows 8 back in October, but the company has started to distribute it in the latest nightly builds this week. Like Chrome, with Firefox for Windows 8 you’ll need to set the browser as the default one to access the “Metro style” version. This allows Firefox to run in Microsoft’s new Windows 8 environment.
We tried it out on Windows 8 this week, and it’s clear the version available is in the very early stages of release. Tabs are functional, alongside the ability to pin and favorite sites, but the settings are somewhat limited. We found that if you use the Windows 8 search Charm within Firefox it will, oddly enough, use Microsoft’s Bing search engine rather than Google…
