Sony’s break-apart DualShock controller brought to life, coming to Kickstarter

Mad Genius Controllers believes it can make Sony’s idea of a break-apart DualShock controller a reality with its new splittable motion controller prototype. The Mad Genius Motion Capture System mimics an Xbox 360 controller in its current form, but is able to bring motion control and tracking to any game on Xbox, PlayStation, Wii, and PC using its camera-less sensor technology.

Mutants Here We Come!: Extinct Frog That Gave Birth Out Of Its Mouth Being Brought Back To Life

Gastric-brooding frogs went extinct in Australia in the mid 1980′s, probably thanks to humanity (shocking, I know). They’re called gastric-brooding frogs because the mothers would swallow their fertilized eggs, then incubate them in their stomachs through the hatching and tadpole stages until it was finally time to puke up all their children. I really hope you’re reading this on your lunch break by the way. And now scientists are going to BRING THEM BACK TO LIFE and have already created early stage embryos of the species.
The revival of the genome was part of the Lazarus Project that is working on a so called de-extinction program to bring the dead species of frog back to life.
So far the team of scientists was able to reactivate dead cells into living ones by unfreezing and implanting the nuclei, taken from fossilized tissues of the frog that were collected in the 1970s and preserved in a deep-freezer.
“We are watching Lazarus arise from the dead, step by exciting step. We’ve reactivated dead cells into living ones and revived the extinct frog’s genome in the process. Now we have fresh cryo-preserved cells of the extinct frog to use in future cloning experiments,” said professor Mike Archer, of the University of New South Wales, in Sydney, the leader of the Lazarus Project team
For those of you who didn’t go to vacation bible school, the Lazarus Project refers to Lazarus of Bethany, a man Jesus allegedly raised from the dead four days after his death, according to the Gospel of John. So basically scientists are for-real playing Jesus now. Me? I only play Jesus in sports that involve sprinting because he always wears sandals and can’t run that fast. Isn’t that right, Jesus? “Race you across the lake?” Good one.
Thanks to clarissa, who didn’t explain it all but that’s okay because the unexplained parts I just attributed to magic like they used to in the old days before science came along and ruined everything.![]()

Extinct frog that gives birth from its mouth nearly brought back to life

If ever before there was a heartwarming (or stomach-turning, relying on your affinity for amphibians) tale to start your weekend, it is this one. Mike Archer, an expert at the College of New South Wales, is on the cusp of successfully cloning an extinct types of frog called Rheobatrachus, much better known as the gastric-brooding frog. The frog, which went from initial discovery in 1972 to its eventual extinction in 1983, is well-known for the one-of-a-kind way it offers childbirth. As uncovered by Mike Tyler of the University of Adelaide, the mom actually swallows its very own eggs and then stops producing stomach acid so they could hatch in her stomach, live as tadpoles, and 6 weeks later on are “born” as the mother frog vomits them up.
Up until now, making use of …

LG teases several new smartphones for MWC, is brought to you by the letters G, L, V and F
LG isn’t really done making unclear pointers at exactly what it’s got in shop for us in Barcelona next week. While we admittedly missed it on our first viewing, the most up to date trailer flies past numerous red initials and unclear glances of four handsets. There’s an L (design?), a G (achievement), one V (view, or Vu) and a brand-new one, F, that evidently means liberty. Simply put, it looks like LG may be bringing several phones to the show. The brief video additionally puts lots of emphasis on tags, which we’re guessing will involve some NFC tech– possibly expanding on those “Tag On” stickers we saw revealed at CES last month. We simply wishthe message was as loud and clear as the songs in the teaser. You have actually been warned.

How the world’s largest spam botnet was brought down

Eight months ago, the Grum botnet was estimated to be the largest in the world, pumping out a third of the global volume of spam email. But things changed over the following six months as Atif Mushtaq, senior staff scientist at security firm FireEye, noticed an abrupt drop in the number of active command-and-control servers — the network’s nerve centers — and sensed the perfect time to mount an offensive. Thanks to a coordinated, global attack, the infestation shriveled to 20,000 zombies; infected computers awaiting instructions that will never come. TechCrunch takes an informative look at how Grum operated, and how a weakness in its code allowed some determined spam fighters to take it permanently offline.

Portal gun brought to life in video short

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like if your friends got their hands on a functioning Portal gun, you should check out visual effects and motion graphics artist Jason Craft’s latest project on Vimeo. While the plot isn’t much more than a few guys messing around with some highly advanced technology, the video is still amusing and the visual effects are fantastic. Craft started the project as an experiment, and used 3D tracking and 3D camera projection to pull off some truly impressive special effects. Check out the video below.

Best Buy Employee ‘Outs’ Straight Man On Facebook Who Brought His Phone In For Repair

Rich Dewberry, who, despite the name, is allegedly straight, was recently falsely outed on Facebook by a Best Buy employee who was supposed to repair his phone but instead posted a message on Rich’s already-signed-in Facebook account. The Geek Squad: maybe not as professional as we’d like to think. The offending employee has since been fired.
Rich Dewberry said he brought in his mobile device to get fixed and was given a new phone. Shortly afterward, his Facebook status read, “I am gay, I’m coming out.”
“The phone just started ringing constantly after that from [an] ex-spouse to friends,” he told ABC’s Denver affiliate, KMGH.
“Just having to explain it to certain people that I haven’t been in contact for a while,” he said. “I feel I shouldn’t have to do that.”
Listen Rich: people thinking you’re gay isn’t the worst thing that can happen to a person. As a matter of fact, on several occasions it’s allowed me to see some boobs that I never would have been able to see otherwise. *girl that’s a friend changing* “You ARE gay, right?” OMG, sister — THE GAYEST.
Thanks to Suzanne, who agrees updating somebody else’s Facebook status on an auto-logged in device is like the LOL-iest! Jk jk, f***ing lame.

TruPrint brings proper printer support to iOS if you brought the jailbreak (video)

AirPrint is great in theory, but in practice your chances of finding a supported printer in the copier room are roughly equivalent to spotting a yellow-eared parrot in the wild. TruPrint boosts those chances dramatically, adding iOS support for “most” printers that are shared on the network. Unfortunately no actual listing of supported models has been provided, but there’s a three day free trial if installed over Cydia so you can try it for yourself — yes, you’ll need to jailbreak first. After that it’s $ 9.99, which is a bit steep, but if it saves you having to wait in just one line at the airport terminal to print a boarding pass it’s well, well worth it.

Mass Effect’s M8 Avenger rifle brought to exquisitely detailed life

Harrison Krix understands if you don’t remember his name. After all, your mind can’t be expected to retain information when you’ve just seen the spectacular Portal gun and Daft Punk helmet the man has already authored. Latest on his hitlist is a homage to the awesomeness that is Mass Effect. Employing mostly leftover bits from previous projects and $28-worth of new materials, Harrison set about the task of recreating Commander Shepard’s trusty assault rifle. The source will delight your eyeballs with a litany of pictures and build details, though our major question remains unanswered — does it use armor-piercing, incendiary, or shredder rounds?
