Spoiler: The video above programs SpaceX ’ s 100-foot-tall Grasshopper rocket blasting off, hovering in the air for about 30 seconds and then descending back to terra firma. And it ’ s set to Johnny Cash ’ s Ring of Fire. That ’ s it. There ’ s no dramatization, fireworks or anything shocking, however it ’ s still absurdly important and entirely worth seeing.
This launch marks the reusable rocket ’ s most considerable flight yet. It reached a record 262.8 feet prior to reducing itself pull back by itself launch pad. Elon Musk called it the Johnny Money hover slam.
Designed to launch and land vertically on its metal legs, the Grasshopper is part of SpaceX ’ s long-term roadmap. The business has yet to expose when it means to install the model — or its successors — for space air travel. The rocket has been in screening since September 2012, with each test launch reaching a bit deeper to the stars above.
“The US is a nation of explorers, ” stated Musk at his SXSWi keynote including “ Individuals should believe that [space travel] is not visiting bankrupt them.”
For numerous years Musk has actually championed the idea that people should be a multi-planet species and a multiple-use rocket, like the Grasshopper below, is a huge part of his grand vision.

Photographer Justin Barton has photographed the instruments and storehouses of nuclear death in the United States and the former Soviet Union, in a series titled “Atomic War in Details.” In a profile of the project from Wired, Barton says that he wants to “force people to look at the detail of these things they dismiss as history and irrelevant to our age.” As Wired points out, Barton’s work — which focuses on hardware like control panels and telephones — highlights the strange monotony of terror; something even Major Kong is familiar with.

NASA’s next generation rocket engine has passed its second wave of experiments, blasting through a 500-second test burst. The new rocket is primed to power the agency’s forthcoming Space Launch System, currently pegged for launch in 2017. The Orion spacecraft will be able to piggyback on the SLS, expanding the range of space travel, and bringing that final frontier just a little bit closer. Check out the thrust needed to launch up to 130 metric tons into space in the test video right after the break.
Ever wonder what the blast from a tank looks like in slow-motion? Well rest easy, Admiral Inquisitive, because that’s exactly what this is. Unless I embedded the wrong video, in which case it might be one of me with a grocery bag over my head ranting about trolls and how I want to burn/eat them all alive. What? I’m half fire-dragon, yo!
The tank is a Russian T-90, a third-generation 46.5-tonne beast with a steel-composite-reactive blend armor, shooting a 125mm shell.
The camera is a Photron, a high speed, ultra high definition camera made for scientific analysis.
Oh come on — was the camera actually designed for scientific analysis, or watching really cool things in slow-motion? “Scientific analysis.” I’ll ask again — scientific analysis, or cool things in slow-mo? “Scientific analysis.” Okay this time just blink your eyes so I know I’m right.

If you’ve seen our Hong Kong feature from awhile back, then you would’ve already heard about my favorite gadget hangout Sham Shui Po. By chance, my post-flight stroll in said district yesterday coincided with Apliu Street’s Chinese New Year flea market, which featured many vintage items like jade figurines, paintings, jewelry, video tapes, vinyl records, etc. Naturally, what really caught my attention were the old gadgets that were literally piled up along the street, and from just HK$ 30 (US$ 3.85), you could easily pick up an old classic such as a Sony Clié, an HP iPaq, a WonderSwan Color, an original GameBoy, a MiniDisc player, or even a proper old school laptop or camera. Hell, some guy even had a couple of Nintendo Micro VS Systems (Donkey Kong Hockey and Boxing)!
The catch? Well, there was obviously no warranty for these old timers, plus the broken screens or the lack of compatible batteries for some meant that most were more suitable as collectibles. Regardless, we took a $ 6 gamble with a Sony Clié PEG-NR70 Palm PDA with docking station and boom! It works! Well, except for the battery that only lasts for an hour, but I’ll figure something out.
