PlayStation 4 in Australia and Europe won’t get full PSN features at launch

PlayStation 4 What's New section

Sony has been rather successful in selling the PlayStation 4, to the point where the PlayStation Network has strained under the load. The company doesn’t want to worsen these problems with its PS4 launches in Australia, Europe and New Zealand, so it’s taking an unusual step: for the first few days after release in these areas, it’s disabling friend activity in both the What’s New and content info sections. Activity will come back once the initial frenzy is over, Sony says. The decision won’t make a big impact on gameplay when multiplayer and other core features will be available on day one, but it may catch a few players off-guard.

BBC Worldwide to offer first-run TV to Australia through Foxtel in mid-2014

BBC Worldwide offers firstrun TV to Australia through a premium Foxtel channel

Australians have long had access to the BBC, although an existing four-channel schedule on Foxtel won’t completely satisfy fans of British TV when it’s just a sliver of the material they understand. BBC Worldwide should be closing some of that (figurative) distance, though, with plans to provide a premium channel with Foxtel’s network. The as-yet-unnamed service will give Aussies a chance at first-run BBC shows about a year before they ‘d broadcast over the air there. and without advertisements. (Respectable for not having a UK TV license.) The BBC material will naturally be offered in HD, in addition to for mobile streaming with Foxtel Go. About the only drawback to the channel beyond its premium nature is the mid-2014 start date, but that could be a small sacrifice for identified Anglophiles and ex-pats.

Dsc_3231-875_large

Google has been putting some weight behind its Chromebook line lately, and now it’s making them available to a lot more potential customers. The company is announcing that Chromebooks from Acer, HP, and Samsung will now be available in a number of new countries: Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, France, and the Netherlands. Those in the United States will also find it a little easier to pick up a Chrome OS machine, as Best Buy will begin carrying Chromebooks in every location that sells computers. According to Google, that will double the number of US stores that carry the Chromebook line in the US. Whether increased availability will help the computers gain a toehold in the market, however, is another question entirely.

Four Smurfs Arrested In Australia After Mini Crime Spree

smuft-bandits.jpg

Mini, get it? Because they’re Smurfs and Smurfs are small.

Seen here looking even dumber than they did in my mind prior to seeing a picture, three of the four teenage Smurfs that were arrested following a crime spree in Australia are seen on a 7-11′s security footage. The Smurfs was arrested after trying to hotwire a car. Oh, and beating up a guy who gave one of them a free cigarette but wouldn’t light it. Wait — so he gave you a cigarette, and then you beat him up? Those might be the worst manners I’ve ever heard of. Thankfully, the blue man group turned themselves in after the security camera footage was released and they realized they were the world’s saddest criminals and would probably benefit from a little butt-love in the clink. I hereby sentence you to…death at Gargamel’s hand, MWAHAHAHAHA! “Jesus, GW, don’t you think that’s a little steep?” *looking at picture* No, no I do not.

Hit the jump for the security camera footage of them buying energy drinks and scratching their asses.
