Trustonic: a way for mobile apps to benefit from ARM’s hardware-level security

Image

This right here narrative starts back in April, when ARM, Giesecke & Devrient and Gemalto teamed up and provided themselves precisely nine months where to discover the ideal trademark name for their recently merged mobile security platform. Today, we’re looking at the fruits of their initiatives: Trustonic; a word which snappily catches the essence of just what’s at stake (trust-onic) and which you could quickly experience in hookup with your next-gen mobile phone, Mastercard payment application or 20th Century Fox DRM ‘d media.

What does Trustonic do, exactly? Pretty much exactly what Mobicore currently does in the Galaxy S III, or what Relied on Foundation does inside an Tegra-powered tablet: it enables certain pieces of software to tap into hardware-level encryption and authentication, thanks to the TrustZone silicon that lots of ARM chips currently contain, thereby removing many of the dangers that come with malware and other intrusions within the mobile OS. As far as we understand it, the vital difference with Trustonic is that it will not need direct input from OEMs like Samsung and NVIDIA, but will rather be more conveniently accessible to any financial, repayment or DRM service that is prepared to pay for a trick. In return, the service would get improved security and faster logins for its users, who ‘d just should enter a brief, locally-verified PIN as opposed to wading with cloud-based steps to prove their identity. Certainly, perhaps that’s where the tonic comes into it.

DJ MC Escher: Arms Attached To Turntables Draw Picture

dj-art-drawing.jpg

This is a mesmerizing video of an arm attached to two record players drawing. What’s it drawing? ‘DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE’ over and over. Just kidding, it looks like a worm-hole or something. And speaking of worm holes: one time I got a worm to eat a piece of string and then when it came out the other side I tied the string in a knot and wore him as a necklace. He would do little laps around my neck constantly eating the string! Then he dried up.

Apple Strikes Back In Jailbreak-Siri Arms Race

new

When Siri was announced strictly for the iPhone 4S, the mod community likely took that as a challenge. Before long, the service had been hacked and shortly thereafter ported to a number of potentially compatible devices.

The problem, of course, is that Apple gets to decide what devices are compatible, not the users. So they’ve taken steps to undo the work that hackers and jailbreakers have done to bring Siri to older iOS devices. Today brings a new volley, though it’s only a matter of time before it too is circumvented.

Spire, the jailbreak-related Siri porting tool for non-4S devices, has been disabled by an update from Apple that adds an extra requirement to the Siri authentication process. A new “SetActivationToken” plist file prevents the current hack from functioning correctly. Well, that’s it, everybody go home, Siri is safe from interlopers.

In fact, it has been pointed out that a little deep file management fixes the problem — not a fix a casual user would do, but few casual users will have gone through with the non-trivial Spire install process to begin with. Chances are a small fix will be made available and then a more thorough one will hit when 5.1 hits.

Apple, in the meantime, will continue to desultorily fight back. Their rationale for not supporting older devices isn’t really clear, but it probably doesn’t have anything to do with the older devices being unable to perform the tasks Siri does on-device. Commentators seem to agree that it was a combination of marketing and an inability to scale to support the whole iOS population. That would explain why their work to disrupt non-4S Siri devices has been something less than intense. A hundred thousand jailbreakers won’t knock over the servers, but 50 million iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches would be sure to.

New Yeti Crab Farms Bacteria On Its Arms To Eat

yeti-crab.jpg

This is a newly discovered species of Yeti (NOT Batman) crab. It’s similar to the other hairy-armed Yeti crabs except this one grows edible bacteria on its arms by methodically waving them around in front of deep sea methane vents. And speaking of deep sea methane vents: blue whales. You don’t want to be sitting in a dinghy when one of those fart bubbles surfaces!

Hit the jump for two short videos, one of the hairy arm waving, one of chow-time.

Seen here looking eerily human, Boston Dynamics’ bipedal humanoid robot PETMAN has been upgraded with arms (capable of pushups!) and a smoother gait. Well thank God! If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s a goofy-walking robot. OMG — did you see PETMAN walking on his toes? What a sped!
