Gyft opens up to developers, offers sign-up page for APIs

Verizon to offer APIs to give your data rate an on-demand boost, for a price

There’s a ton of data-dependent apps these days, and with services like iCloud and Spotify gaining steam, your precious bytes of data can get bogged down with all the additional traffic. Help is on the way for Verizon customers, however, as the company plans to release an API that will allow users to speed up their connection at will from within apps. This network optimization API will be joined by a microtransaction API (developed in conjunction with Vodafone) to make sure Big Red gets paid for every bit of bandwidth nitro you ask for. Work on the APIs is ongoing at VZW’s Innovation Center in San Francisco, but neither API will be ready for prime time until next year. That’s a long time to wait, but the idea of improving our data connection at the press of a button has us positively giddy. What about you?

‘Tis a sad day in the world of Google… at least for developers who use any of a handful of ill-fated APIs. As the search giant’s API list has grown in recent months, it’s making the decision to cull a few in the effort of “spring cleaning.” In fact, a grand total of seven new APIs were launched during Google I/O alone, but it looks as if the end is nigh for the Blog Search API, Books Data API, Image Search API, News Search API, Patent Search API, Safe Browsing API (v1 only), Translate API, Transliterate API, Video Search API and Virtual Keyboard API. Of those, Wave is most unsurprising, but Translate likely hurts the most — particularly for jetsetters who relied on those baked-in services to wrap their heads around various tongues. According to Goog, the Translate API has been officially deprecated “due to the substantial economic burden caused by extensive abuse.” A pretty ominous phrase, to be sure, and further proof that a few rotten apples can ruin things for the whole of us. Pardon us as we coin the term “apportunity” to describe the upcoming developer program Eye-Fi has just announced. Developers will able to tie their apps / applications / sites into Eye-Fi features and services through the web, including accessing an Eye-Fi card for photos and video, changing settings on the card, and uploading to online sharing sites through Eye-Fi channels instead of directly connecting to each site. It all sounds very promising in a niche, people-who-use-WiFi-SD-cards sort of way, and we look forward to the results as Eye-Fi starts giving out API keys in phases, beginning this fall.
