SpaceX ‘Grasshopper’ Test Brings Us One Step Closer To Resuable Spaceships, Banging Aliens On The Cheap

This is a video of private space exploration company SpaceX successfully testing their Grasshopper vertical take off and landing (VTVL) vehicle. The Grasshopper was designed to be a rapidly reusable spacecraft so that, one day soon, we’ll all be able to know what space feels like. SPOILER: Creepy and dark. Still — you get to float.
On Thursday, March 7, 2013, SpaceX’s Grasshopper doubled its highest leap to date to rise 24 stories or 80.1 meters (262.8 feet), hovering for approximately 34 seconds and landing safely using closed loop thrust vector and throttle control. Grasshopper touched down with its most accurate precision thus far on the centermost part of the launch pad.
Grasshopper, SpaceX’s vertical takeoff and landing (VTVL) vehicle, continues SpaceX’s work toward one of its key goals – developing fully and rapidly reusable rockets, a feat that will transform space exploration by radically reducing its cost. With Grasshopper, SpaceX engineers are testing the technology that would enable a launched rocket to land intact, rather than burning up upon reentry to the Earth’s atmosphere.
By a show of hands, how many of you actually think you’d be able to handle the intensity and claustrophobia of traveling to space? Because I struggle even in my car. You’d have to cryogenically freeze me to get me into space, and as soon as you thawed me I’d either have a heart attack or murder everyone on the ship. Just don’t go repeating that to the folks at the Mission to Mars thing , because I totally signed up for that.

This is a realer-than-real sculpture of Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) from the original ‘Alien’. It was sculpted (cast) by Steve Scotts out of silicon and a big box of SICK TALENT. I actually had to go back and look at all the in-process shots to make sure it was real. AND IT IS. The bulge in my pants? That’s a Snickers bar.

Astronomers in Chile utilizing the European Southern Observatory’s Very Sizable Telescope are now able to evaluate the atmosphere on faraway planet Tau Bootis b. Utilizing CRIRES, a supercooled infrared spectrograph bolted to the ‘scope, the team was able to evaluate the dimension of the exoplanet– and for the very first time, take a reading of the atmosphere while not in transit. Historically, the only time specialists have been able to carry out atmospheric analysis is throughout the transit of its close-by star, which imprints the qualities of the atmosphere onto the light. The group located that Tau Bootis b is around six times the size of Jupiter, but its air is so thick with Carbon Monoxide that we’ll need to look elsewhere to organize that expedition to the stars.

SIDESHOW COLLECTIBLES: Stan Winston Studios and Sideshow Collectibles have once again joined forces to transform one of Hollywood’s most memorable monsters into a life-size collectible. John Rosengrant, a 20-year-plus veteran at SWS, developed the life-size Alien Warrior bust with Stan Winston’s guidance. John and his team started with the original film molds of the Alien Warriors from the film Aliens. This is the first time that the xenomorph from Aliens has been crafted as a life-size collectible, and the team worked diligently to recreate the Aliens version of the warrior. The finished bust is roughly 3 feet long, and nearly 2 feet tall, and complete with partial shoulders. The menacing alien visage is eerily life-like and detailed, a perfect reproduction of the life form that Stan Winston Studios evolved from Giger’s original industrial-organic design. Each bust is hand cast, with a mixture of polystone and fiberglass parts, all hand finished with the Alien’s signature wet and glossy appearance. There is a wealth of paint detail beneath the seemingly black surface, beautiful to behold, but don’t get too close to this deadly bust.
