Alan Westin, scholar who helped shape internet privacy law, dies at 83

Alan F. Westin, the lawyer and political scientist whose work shaped the way we define online privacy, died last week at the age of 83. As the New York Times reports, Westin had spent the past 40 years teaching at Columbia University, where he served as emeritus professor of public law and government. He is widely credited with spearheading the development of contemporary privacy law, most notably through his seminal book, Privacy and Freedom, published in 1967.
“He was the most important scholar of privacy since Louis Brandeis,” said Jeffrey Rosen, a professor of law at George Washington University, making reference to the Supreme Court Justice who, in the late 19th century, became the first to define privacy as a legal right. Westin…

Play Monopoly as Alan Turing did with new special edition board

When Alan Turing wasn’t busy contributing to the industries of computing and synthetic intelligence, the famous mathematician took pleasure in a periodic game of Monopoly– also going to the point of playing on a hand-drawn board made by good friend William Newman. With the formal Alan Turing edition of Monopoly, members can experience the game as he did with a board created after the initial hand-drawn model.
This isn’t merely a straightforward reskin either: the game will certainly consist of never-before-seen images of Turing, huts and blocks instead of hotels and properties, the board’s back story, and even Newman’s initial guidelines. The Alan Turing Monopoly game can be pre-ordered now for & pound; 29.99 (about $ 48) with deliveries anticipated to start in November. All proceeds of …

Alan Turing’s breakthrough machine gets a loving Lego tribute (video)
In the globe of modern technology, having one of your inventions rendered in Lego form is the equivalent of an entertainer being parodied by Weird Al– it’s an indication you have actually truly made it and tribute to your impact. So, we’re greater than a little surprised to see that it’s taken this long for the Turing Machine to be lovingly constructed from plastic bricks. The heart of this simple reasoning machine is a Lego Mindstorms NXT set, but the soul is in Alan Turing’s wizard– a man who was before his time and unjustly persecuted for failing to effectively fit into culture’s molds. Dutch researchers Jeroen van den Bosand and Davy Landman created the device as a tribute to Turing, that would have celebrated his 100th birthday this Sunday. If you’re in Amsterdam you can easily see the machine yourself at Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica’s Turings Erfenis exhibit. Or, you can easily view the short explanatory video clip after the break.

Remembering Alan Turing at 100
Alan Turing would have turned 100 this week, an event that would have, no doubt, been greeted with all manner of pomp — the centennial of a man whose mid-century concepts would set the stage for modern computing. Turing, of course, never made it that far, found dead at age 41 from cyanide poisoning, possibly self-inflicted. His story is that of a brilliant mind cut down in its prime for sad and ultimately baffling reasons, a man who accomplished so much in a short time and almost certainly would have had far more to give, if not for a society that couldn’t accept him for who he was.
The London-born computing pioneer’s name is probably most immediately recognized in the form of the Turing Machine, the “automatic machine” he discussed in a 1936 paper and formally extrapolated over the years. The concept would help lay the foundation for future computer science, arguing that a simple machine, given enough tape (or, perhaps more appropriately in the modern sense, storage) could be used to solve complex equations. All that was needed as Turing laid it out, was a writing method, a way of manipulating what’s written and a really long ream to write on. In order to increase the complexity, only the storage, not the machine, needs upgrading.

Alan Wake proves PC gaming still alive and well, earns back development and marketing costs in 48 hours

PC gaming has been declared dead time and time again over the years, but developer Remedy has just shown that there’s still a large market for games on the ol’ desktop. The company proclaimed today that its highly-rated $ 29.99 self-published port of the psychological thriller Alan Wake was the number one selling game on Steam last weekend, and, more importantly, that it recouped its entire development and marketing expenses for the port within 48 hours of its release on the 16th. Of course, the money spent on the PC edition — which was developed with the assistance of Nitro Games — surely pales in comparison to that of the original Xbox 360-only title, which went five years between its announcement in 2005 and its release in 2010….

Alan Haberman, barcode advocate, dies at 81
A man whose impact on the world is nearly unfathomable died Sunday. Alan L. Haberman, supermarket-executive-turned-barcode-champion, died in Newton Massachusetts from complications of heart and lung disease at the age of 81. While he did not invent those ubiquitous black and white stripes — that honor belongs to Norman Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver — Haberman did lead the campaign to make barcodes the universal standard for electronic product encoding. He chaired the committee responsible for the designation of the zebra-like markings, which in 1973 adopted a barcode designed by George J. Laurer of IBM. In his work at the Uniform Code Council (now known as GS1 US), he pushed for acceptance of multiple standards, including RFID. His obituary can be read in-full at the source link below.
