JiWire, AWG use location-based ads to spread free airport WiFi in the US
Many of us here at Engadget know the value of free airport WiFi all too well, having just flown back to our various corners of the globe — if a cellular or toll-based hotspot isn’t an option, free internet access can be a lifeline. JiWire and AWG don’t want us to face that dilemma. They’re expanding their partnership to use JiWire’s location-based ad system for free, sponsored WiFi across the US. Requiring that passengers see a local ad when they hop online is the best of both worlds, the partnership claims: we get the connection we crave, while nearby shops get exposure. Few would call AWG’s minimum 1Mbps connection an abundance of bandwidth, but it could mean the difference between catching up on YouTube and twiddling thumbs during a layover. Neither company has said exactly when and where they plan to expand. When just 15 US airports rely on AWG’s current service, though, there’s plenty of room to grow.

Drunk Tourist Passes Out On Luggage Conveyor Belt At Airport, Gets Complimentary X-Ray Treatment

Sweet digestive tracts, bro.
A drunk Norwegian traveler checking out Italy just recently rested on a baggage conveyor belt and got x-rayed after attempting to inspect in for a flight but locating no attendant at the work desk. Because that’s just what you do when you’re drunk and things don’t go your way– you offer up and rest. Surprisingly, the x-ray radiation didn’t turn him into CarryOn Guy or anything.
Fifteen minutes later, the vacationer was taking a trip deep into the bowels of the “secure” baggage area, where his huddled, drunken sort was located on one of the X-Ray baggage scanners.
Airport safety’s reaction? “There’s generally an episode like this when a year and we are alert,” an official told the Telegraph.
It happens as soon as a year! Oh man, that’s wonderful. I ask yourself exactly how numerous times a year a vacationer heaves in an airport because they were late for their flight and running with a tummy full of Cinnabon. SPOILER: Both times I’ve flown this year.

No More Wall Wart: Apple Reveals New Airport Express Base Station
Apple isn’t always so forthcoming with certain product announcements. I guess it’s their version of an Easter Egg? Like the Mac Pro update and death of the 17-inch MacBook Pro, they also updated the Airport Express Base Station.
It looks a lot like the Apple TV but it’s white and no longer requires you to plug it directly into the wall. The new Express Base Station supports simultaneous dual-band 802.11n and AirPlay all for $ 99. Maybe I’m missing something but it appears that this is just a cosmetic change with the addition of another ethernet port.
Apple’s AirPort Utility iOS app (iPhone, iPad) was also updated today to support the new Express base station and IPv6.

France’s Toulouse-Blagnac airport to conduct NFC field trials for BlackBerry smartphones
Navigating through airport security is hardly the most fanciful way of kicking off a vacation, but this summer, a handful of frequent fliers in France will take part in a field trial that aims to streamline the process and make it a bit more enjoyable. Fifty lucky travelers armed with BlackBerry smartphones will take part in a pilot study that tests the authentication technology recently developed by Orange and SITA. Upon their arrival at the Toulouse-Blagnac airport, the handset’s NFC-capable SIM card will serve as an access pass to the car park, the premium access zone for departures and even the private lounge area. Smartphone integration will provide travelers with real-time flight information, and it’s said that the handset will even remember the location of one’s vehicle in the car park. As the system is hardware-based, the identity verification technology will even work when the smartphone is turned off. The Toulouse-Blagnac airport aims to have a broader NFC implementation available by 2013-2014, which may allow users to board flights and pay for goods with their mobile device. To learn more about the vision, you’ll find the PR after the break.

Space travel coming to an airport near you? Maybe, if Skylon keeps its cool
Want to get from New York to Perth in under 4 hours, or maybe just head to outer space on a lark? Reaction Engines’ “Skylon” mach 5 spaceplane might be your chariot — or not. Its scheme of ingesting oxygen from the atmosphere instead of stowing it like a 50-year old modern multi-stage rocket sounds good, but the project’s fate may hang on critical new tests. Failure is still a possibility, but if the high-speed, superhot gases can be cooled enough for the hybrid Sabre engines to work, and if Reaction Engines Limited can secure another round of funding, punching your space-ticket could soon be a very real possibility.

Skype turns into Santa, gives you free airport WiFi during the holidays

They don’t call this the “giving time of the year” for nothing. A couple of years back we saw Google hook up the traveling masses with gratis WiFi, and today Skype is matching the big G’s kindness by giving you a holiday gift of its own. Starting on December 21st thru the 27th, you’ll be able to cling to an hour of costless internet access while you’re waiting on your flight — as long as you’re in one of the 50+ airports included in the deal (map shown after the break). Aside from being outside of the lounging areas capable of accepting the courtesy, Android users are being left out of the equation, as the present can only be used by those who own a Mac, PC or iOS device. Now, the nice gesture would be even better if we knew that our fellow travelers wouldn’t be hogging all the bandwidth…
