Casio SK-8 [8-bit] Sampling Keyboard – Texture / Ambient / Drone / Lo-Fi

The Casio SK series and the Yamaha VSS series are wonderful old 8-bit sampler keyboards that had a little condenser mic used to capture anything you want. I’ve been hunting these down for a while and I’ve managed to score this Casio SK-8 and a Casio SK-10 (which is a little less interesting due to it having no input or outputs). This is a little clip of the SK-8′s sampler. I used the on-board piano sound and routed that through a small pedalboard and used the Line 6 Echo Park (in Reverse mode – Digital … I switch to the Tape Setting in the end) as a primitive looper to capture the melody. I then sampled that with the SK-8 by holding the unit to the speaker, sampling it and then using the loop function on it, so the samples would continue. Then I fed that back into the signal chain to create this grainy texture. These old units are fantastic. Lo-Fi, gritty, organic, warm and extremely fun!
