As part of our tour through Verizon’s Waltham, Ma.-based Innovation Center this week, we were able to see a brief demo of the Thinx 4G LTE video monitor — a product that was briefly teased at CES, but we’ve heard precious little about since. Essentially, this is a rather sophisticated 1080p video monitor, designed for small businesses that would prefer that their monitors do more than just capture reels of archived footage. Thinx’s solution throws in an admin panel and a smartphone app; users can install the camera and then define hot zones for the sensor to keep tabs on. If and when a specific event occurs (e.g. 50 individuals cross a virtual line), owners can be alerted via SMS — and, of course, they can then view only the footage pertaining to said event with merely a click.

The aforementioned apps (available for iOS and Android) will allow owners to look in live at any time, with recorded video automatically stored on the included 4GB SD card, a personal NAS or a cloud storage facility like Dropbox. Better still, the control panel supports multiple cameras for those trying to cast eyes over an entire office complex, and there’s room for a 12V battery that’ll keep it humming along “for a few hours” should the power cut out. Tom Thomasson, vice president of marketing at Thinx, told us that the product is slated to go on sale in the US during the third quarter of this year, and it’s one of “over 30″ new products that Verizon will help launch during the 2013 / 2014 time frame.

Panasonic‘s just unveiled the 12-megapixel Lumix DMC-LF1 compact for fans of high-end compacts like Canon’s S110 who may not want to snap with a smartphone camera. But the social set will still be able to share images to their handset or tablet thanks to the LF1′s built-in WiFi with NFC pairing and included app. Meanwhile, most cellphones definitely can’t compete with the 1/1.7-inch, 12-megapixel CMOS sensor and 28-200mm equivalent f2.0-5.9 Leica zoom lens. Other specs include 1,920/60i video with AVCHD and MP4 recording, POWER O.I.S image stabilization, a 200K EVF, a variety of shooting modes like panorama, and full manual control. There’s no set arrival date, but it’ll run a hefty $ 500 or so –perhaps a hard sell against certain photo-clever handsets.

Medion isn’t the best-known PC badge outside of Europe, but it does have an occasional eye for sleek design. We’d say the Lenovo-backed company’s new Akoya P2004 offers that kind of style UK crowd. The all-in-one fits a 23.6-inch, 1080p display into a minimalist design that’s oddly charming for what’s ultimately a budget machine. No one would call the P2004 feature-loaded when it’s carrying a dual-core 3.2GHz Core i3, 4GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive and a DVD burner, but the price is right at a frugal £500 ($ 770). The catch? If you like what’s on offer, you’re going to have to swing by ASDA, which has the UK exclusive. Still, we wouldn’t object too much to picking up a fairly tasteful Windows 8 PC alongside the groceries.

Since the sun came up today it must mean that Hulu is up for sale, again. The latest extension to the sale rumors for the video streaming site is one from Reuters citing anonymous sources that indicates Peter Chernin, a former News Corp exec and Hulu board member has submitted a $ 500 million bid. There’s no word on how big a stake he’d be interested in taking, but that’s significantly lower than the reported $ 1.9 – $ 4 billion bids received from Dish and Google when the site was up for sale back in 2011. Of cours,e any sale price may vary on whether or not the acquisition come content included, but either way, we’d expect a few more possibilites to pop up before something (or nothing, like last time) happens. Of course, Peter Chernin was one of the folks pushing for a shorter theater to home release window and more TV on the Xbox, both of which have come to fruition in one form or another — maybe he can make a deal happen.

After Kodak’s auction to offload 1,100 of its digital imaging patents was green-lit this summer, it appeared like Apple and Google were prepared to do battle for the products. Now, however, Bloomberg points out a pair of sources who declare that the two titans have ended their face-off and are incorporating their efforts in a $ 500 million-plus bid for the patents. All three parties are remaining peaceful in the meantime, however the step would certainly not be out of type for innovation titans when it comes to rewarding, and potentially volatile, patents. Helping Kodak recover from bankruptcy with more cash in its coffers is nice enough, but staying clear of a courtroom fight on digital pictures is exactly what sweetens the flowerpot all around.
