NVIDIA announces Quadro K5000 for Mac Pro, brings 4K support, 2x performance over Quadro 4000

NVIDIA’s Kepler-powered Quadro K5000 GPU will be making its way to Apple’s Mac Pro systems, the company announced today at IBC. The professional graphics card made its debut earlier this summer and is slated to ship beginning in October for $ 2,249. Timing for the Quadro K5000 for Mac isn’t quite so firm, with NVIDIA simply stating that it’ll ship “later this year,” though pricing is expected to be in line with the previously announced flavor. The next-gen GPU is said to offer up to 2x faster performance over the Quadro 4000, while also delivering 4K display support, quad display capability through two DVI-DL and two DisplayPort 1.2 connectors, and 4 gigs of graphics memory. Furthermore, each Mac Pro will be able to support up to two separate cards, should you need the extra power. You’ll find full details in the press release after the break.

Home security may not have reached all-seeing aerial eye proportions, but Swann‘s TrueBlue 4000 series of D1 DVR systems can place up to eight digital peepers throughout your island fortress or humble abode. With a resolution of 480 x 704 pixels, the cameras offer “DVD-quality” video and feature night vision with up to 65 feet of visibility. Those hankering to remotely keep tabs on their homestead can load up the free SwannView app for Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Windows Mobile 6 and Symbian to watch live video on mobile devices. Footage can also be viewed on monitors using HDMI or VGA connections and can be backed up through USB, eSATA or over a network. The maximum one terabyte of storage space nets continuous recording for up to 30 days — or longer if the device’s motion detection settings are flipped on. A 500GB base model with a quartet of cams rings up at $ 549.99, while the more expensive $ 649.99 and $ 749.99 models each pack 1TB hard drives and eight channel support. Nokia Cuts 4000 Jobs; Last European Phone Assembly Work Goes To Asia

It’s a sign of the times, though not a particularly surprising one: Nokia has finally eliminated its European phone assembly infrastructure and will be moving those 4000 jobs to Asia, according to a Reuters report. The factories are not being shuttered altogether, and localizing and finishing work will still be done there, but the primary assembly work is being relocated.
The news and layoffs were expected, as the company has slashed many more thousands of jobs over the last year, but this particular cut is symbolic: the intensely European company has been battered into submission, and will join the others in the now-standard configuration of “design here, build there.”
The job losses are 2300 in Hungary, 1000 in Finland, and 700 in Mexico. They don’t represent all of Nokia’s employees in those countries, just those involved with basic assembly. Nokia did not say where or to what contractor the jobs would be sent, but considering their need to cut costs, the majors in China, Taiwan, Thailand, and others in the area are the natural choice.
Naturally, the countries losing the jobs expressed disappointment, but Nokia’s got to do what Nokia’s got to do, and these job losses have been telegraphed for some time. It’s likely that they were announced today only after extensive negotiations with unions and local contractors.
Whether this approach will prove effective at lowering costs without damaging the company or brand is yet to be seen; it may be that saving money on manufacturing might not be enough to counter the enormous drop in sales Nokia has seen over the last two years.

Upcoming Nikon D800 Said To Be 36-Megapixel, $4000 Monster

Some specs for Nikon’s next semi-pro camera have surfaced on Japanese camera site Digital Camera Info, and Nikon Rumors seems to think they’re creditable. It’s an interesting move by Nikon but not one that will be appreciated by the bulk of DSLR buyers.
The new D800, they say, will pack 36 megapixels on a full frame FX sensor, and essentially forgo advances in low-light performance in order to produce a medium-cost studio camera instead of a lower-cost prosumer one. The rumored $ 4000 price puts it out of most enthusiasts’ reach, and the high megapixel count makes it less practical for sports and field photography.
Video will be 1080p/30, though they may add additional framerates. The LCD will be larger and brighter (likely with an improvement in resolution as well), and there will be two CF cards slots and one SD. The four frame per second burst speed won’t wow anyone, but I’m guessing that is a deliberate decision given the reassigned priorities. The release date is rumored to be November 24th, with an announcement on October 26th.
We’ll see how the rumors pan out, but it’s certainly about time for the Dx00 range to get an update. The problem is that this D800 doesn’t seem to replace the D700 so much as add a new entire type to the lineup, below the D3s in size and low light performance and above the D3x in megapixels. What of the D700? Will there be a new model at the $ 2500-$ 3000 price, perhaps a D700s with a focus on low light? Very little information on that front, unfortunately.
It’s all speculation, of course, until the information is truly out there. And until the cameras are actually reviewed, the capabilities are merely theoretical. Patience is the word today for Nikon fans.
