Virgin Mobile Gets Its First Taste Of WiMax With The $299 EVO V 4G

While Sprint customers wait with bated breath for their new LTE network to go live, the nation’s third largest wireless carrier has just announced that their no-contract subsidiary Virgin Mobile will soon launch their first 4G phone. Starting on May 31, customers will be able to pick up their very own Evo V 4G from Virgin Mobile’s website, with a wider release to come in June.
Despite the device’s name, the Ice Cream Sandwich-powered EVO V 4G isn’t actually a WiMax-friendly version of HTC’s chintastic One V (bummer, I know). In fact, if the specs are any indication — it features a 4.3-inch qHD display, 1GB of RAM, and a 5-megapixel camera capable of “3D HD imaging” — we’re actually looking at a slightly revamped version of the EVO 3D.
As such, you can also expect the device to come preloaded with an 8GB microSD card, an HDMI out port, and mobile hotspot functionality for up to five devices, though it seems to lack the stereoscopic display that earned its forebear some acclaim. Also gone is the older version of the Sense UI that the EVO 3D ran — the EVO V 4G instead sports the slightly new, slightly sleeker Sense 3.6 overlay, though I’m sure some people were hoping against hope for the full Sense 4.0 treatment.
Alright fine, it’s not the hottest handset on the market anymore, but this EVO 3D variant is still the nicest that Virgin has ever offered and the MVNO’s cheapo rate plans only make the deal even sweeter. Just don’t go in expecting too much, because even though Virgin’s “unlimited data” rate plans start off at $ 35/month, you’ll soon find that 4G connection running much slower once you tiptoe over the 2.5GB mark.

Hands-On With the Jawbone Big Jambox: 2.7 Pounds of Audio Fury, Available May 15 for $299

Bigger isn’t necessarily better but in the case of Jawbone’s Jambox, it might actually work out. Typically known for their Bluetooth headsets and the ill-fated-but-not-quite-dead UP band, Jawbone has figured out what their “cool kids” product is and it happens to be a tiny portable speaker.
But for the second generation version, simply called Big Jambox, the company is cranking up the volume from 10 to 11. While it retains some portability, the Big Jambox is really meant for those instances where you have 20 people posted up near the bonfire or you’re looking for a no-fuss micro system for your home entertainment center. At less than three pounds — 2.7 pounds to be specific — it’s still portable but everything else is on steroids. Jawbone says the built-in battery will last up to 15 hours for continuous playback and 500 hours of standby.
A couple of new features sweeten the deal, including a dedicated pairing button and the ability to pair two devices at once. Expect epic DJ battles to commence with friends and loved ones. The Big Jambox will remember up to eight devices and will actively pair itself with the two most recent devices if they’re available over Bluetooth.
The other big feature is LiveAudio, which was made available for original Jambox owners via an update last year. Jawbone explains it as a three-dimensional listening experience. The easiest way to explain it is that there’s varying levels of sound or depth. They also managed to eliminate Crosstalk, so you hear completely different sounds between the left and right side.
While my time with the bigger, badder Jambox was limited, I walked away impressed by this particular feature because it offered a different listening experience. It’s directional and you have to be planted in its direct path to get the full experience. Otherwise, you wouldn’t know the difference if you’re somewhere else in the room.

Droid Incredible 4G LTE Appears On Verizon Promo Site With $299 Price Tag

It’s been spotted in leaked press renders and blurry photos before, but Verizon has just recently (and perhaps inadvertently) made the new Droid Incredible nice and official. The Droid Incredible 4G LTE just popped up on Verizon’s Droid Does promotional site, and while you can’t have one just yet, it’s comforting to know that it’ll see the light of say sooner rather than later.
In addition to a mildly unnerving robo-lady talking up the device’s LTE radio and HTC’s Sense UI, the site also confirms most of the specs that have been previously reported.
The Ice Cream Sandwich-powered Incredible 4G LTE indeed sports a 1.2GHz dual-core processor (though as usual, they don’t mention what make), 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera, in addition to a 4-inch qHD Super LCD display, 8GB of internal storage, and the now-standard Beats Audio profile.
All of that is squeezed into a frame that comes in at 0.46-inches thick — a bit more of a handful than your iPhone or Galaxy Nexus, though I imagine the difference won’t mean much for anyone but the most jaded sticklers. The device also features the same sort of hardware navigation key layout as seen in the HTC One series, though I wish Verizon and HTC would have opted to carry over more of the One series’ wonderful industrial design language.
According to the Droid Does site, Verizon will be selling the Droid Incredible 4G LTE (I’m getting really tired of typing that out) for $ 299 with a two-year contract. When, exactly, they’ll start selling the thing is still unknown — despite having a Buy Now link placed prominently on the page, clicking the link takes you to the product page for the Motorola Razr MAXX. Those teases.
