Seiki officially prices its 50-inch 4K TV at $1,500 with a late April launch

Seiki 50-inch 4K set

Fast payday loans For Every One

When Seiki’s 4K TV set popped up on retail listings with a price that’s just a fraction of what we’ve seen from its more expensive rivals, we were almost convinced it was a site glitch — that couldn’t be real, could it? The company would like to reassure us that it’s quite serious. The 50-inch Ultra HD set is officially shipping to the US later in April, and it will still carry that regular $ 1,500 price tag when sales expand from TigerDirect (which claims to have stock today) to include Amazon and QVC, among others. We’d remain cautious about leaping in when Seiki is trying to skip a year or three of the usual commoditization process, but those who insist on their 4K bragging rights won’t have long to wait before they can start boasting.

Google Glass Targeting End Of 2013 Consumer Release, With Price Tag Under $1,500

glass-model-logo-google

Google seems to be looking to bring its ambitious Google Glass wearable computer to market much faster than many likely anticipated, according to the Verge. Google told the site that it hopes to have a “fully-polished” version of Glass available for sale to ordinary consumers by the end of 2013. The cost will be under the $ 1,500 Google was asking for developer-targeted editions of the headsets put up for pre-order first at Google I/O, and then again earlier this week.

This is the most clear Google has been yet about its public release schedule for the headset-mounted computing device. The company had previously been reported to be targeting a year-end 2013 consumer release, with a price point around that of current smartphones, according to a report from last February by the New York Times’ Nick Bilton. Then in June 2012, Google co-founder Sergey Brin suggested that a rough timeline for developer and consumer availability would put the device in the hands of the general public in 2014.

This time, a Google official has said directly that the company is targeting an end-of-year release date, so there’s little room for different interpretations there, and the credibility of the source isn’t up for debate. Google’s recent release to a broader audience beyond just developers via an application process indicates things might be moving quicker than the company previously expected.

The Verge also got some extended hands-on time with Glass, and notes that it is compatible with iPhone devices as well as Android handsets. They also came away convinced that this is something that Google will eventually be able to turn into a device with mass-market appeal, whether or not it’s quite at that stage by the time it hopefully hits shelves later this year.

Leica shows off Paul Smith-designed X2 limited to 1,500 units

leica paul smith x2

It would not be a day of Leica announcements without an elegant unique edition, and the legendary German camera system producer hasn’t disappointed. Following the intro of the brand-new M and M-E, Leica has also unveiled a Paul Smith-designed edition of the X2 premium compact. The fashion designer has decked out the X2 in orange, yellow, and British racing green stripes with a lightbulb engraving on the flash cover, as well as creating a taupe calfskin instance and band for the camera system.

We’re unconvinced that the gaudy design is completely suitable for discreet street photography, but the Leica collectors amongst us are unexpected to care too a lot. The Paul Smith edition X2 is limited to 1,500 units, and while there’s no word on a date or price …

Google Glass Explorer Edition Available For Pre-Order At Google I/O, $1,500 And Shipping Next Year

googglass

Google Glass is real and will certainly soon be shipping. Sergey Brin just took the stage at Google I/O, won the Web with a fantastic skydiving demo of the device and then announced that Google Glass is offered for pre-ordering. Named Glass Explorer Edition, it ’ s accessible to those at Google I/O and costs a whopping $ 1,500. Plus, the device will definitely not deliver until following year. But Google Glass is actual. This is big.

Google spent about 30 minutes explaining and displaying Google Glass at today ’ s I/O keynote. However it was peculiar. The presentation wasn ’ t as polished as the keynote ’ s other events. It felt off the cuff. As Sergey clarified at the end of the event, Google still doesn ’ t understand all the usage situations of Google Glass. The business is still building not just the item, however even the philosophy behind Glass. That ’ s why Google is making Glass available to those that really love Google. It needs support.

Now Glass Explorer Edition is just for the US and the device is only readily available for pre-order by I/O attendees. Sergey clarified that there are some regulatory problems to solve prior to International shipping.

Modding Community Offers $1500 Bounty For TouchPad Android Port

HP-TouchPad-Android-600x476

This weekend’s TouchPad fire sale has more or less petered out, and thousands of HP’s little tablet that couldn’t have found new homes. Not everyone seems to love WebOS though, as a growing number of people who bought bargain-bin TouchPads are clamoring for a tablet experience that’s a bit more… shall we say, relevant.

Thanks to its open nature, Android is the OS of choice for a TouchPad port, and now the folks at a modding community called HackNMod are offering bounties to the devs that can make it happen.

The total amount of money up for grabs is $ 1500, but it’s broken down into several parts, so the multiple devs will get a chance at a payout.

Whoever is first able to get a “basic Android port” up and running on the TouchPad nets $ 400. HackNMod doesn’t elaborate on what exactly constitutes a “basic port,” but presumably the device would have to boot into Android with a decent degree of stability. The sub-bounties run the gamut as far as payout: the team that gets WiFi to work nabs $ 350, the audio team gets $ 300, and the multitouch team gets $ 100. Developers will have one more thing to contend with: their solutions have to be easy enough for the average user to install on their own.

As with all things, there is a bit of a catch: while the $ 450 for the Android port itself comes out of HackNMod’s pockets, the rest are being left up to sponsors. In a way, it’s the perfect system for a project like this: the features with the highest demand are (hopefully) the ones that will be funded. Interested parties can also throw in money for other features they want to see working, leading to more sub-bounties for eager devs to jump on.

Itching to throw your hat in the ring? Be sure to post your code on GitHub and provide photo & video evidence. Ready, go!

Hacker intercepts phone calls with homebuilt $1,500 IMSI catcher, claims GSM is beyond repair

In 2009, Chris Paget showed the world the vulnerabilities of RFID by downloading the contents of US passports from the safety of his automobile. This year, he’s doing the same for mobile phones. Demonstrating at DefCon 2010, the white hat hacker fooled 17 nearby GSM phones into believing his $1,500 kit (including a laptop and two RF antennas) was a legitimate cell phone base station, and proceeded to intercept and record audience calls. “As far as your cell phones are concerned, I’m now indistinguishable from AT&T,” he told the crowd. The purpose of the demonstration was highlight a major flaw in the 2G GSM system, which directs phones to connect to the tower with the strongest signal regardless of origin — in this case, Paget’s phony tower.

The hacker did caveat that his system could only intercept outbound calls, and that caller ID could tip off the owner of a handset to what’s what, but he says professional IMSI catchers used by law enforcement don’t suffer from such flaws and amateur parity would only be a matter of time. “GSM is broken,” Paget said, “The primary solution is to turn it off altogether.” That’s a tall order for a world still very dependent on the technology for mobile connectivity, but we suppose AT&T and T-Mobile could show the way. Then again, we imagine much of that same world is still using WEP and WPA to “secure” their WiFi.
