Automation engineers are a dime a dozen. If you want to be useful, combine your automation with some other field of study so that you can really be in demand. I finished a mech eng degree, and then took some biochemistry. It is paying dividends for me now!

I work in Industrial Automation& Robotics field and they are always looking for well rounded people to fill Field service , custom automation shops and Industrail plants. The scope all depends on the company some want the person to R&D and build there automation and other just want someone to over see it. The cost for the degree will be well worth it.
I would suggest after you get your degree look for something in the Field service end to start. Those job will give you alot of knowledge and will also start a network of people to advance your career. But look for the ones that pay by the hour cause you will travel and work alot. Depending on the field they pay about $ 40,000 to 75,000 and most of the time that doesn’t include the OT you will get.
