I want to learn as much as i can about robotics any books or anything good to read that will give me an idea?
Question by ninjamouse02: I want to learn as much as i can about robotics any books or anything good to read that will give me an idea?
I want to be able to make a robot from scratch not like a kit like to buy parts and put them together.I really love robotics and i am willing to read and spend money on learning and building robots.Prefferable to start out with the best book there is to start learning to build and program robots.
Please and thank you

The best book on how to BUILD robots is
Robot Builder’s Bonanza
This book is great for learning how to build a robot from
scratch like you say you want.
I do not suggest this aproach however. It is best to get into
things slowly and then build up your skills. To build a robot from
scratch is a very time consuming and TOOLS consuming
process and you never REALLY get to have your robot do
anything interesting.
It is better to start with a KIT and learn from that THEN with
the acquired knowledge you can proceed to harder projects.
In my opinion the BEST place for learning about hardware and
building robots is www.Parallax.com where you will find
many kits and EXCELLENT books and forums (forums.parallax.com).
ALSO….building a robot is half the picture….programming a
robot is the other half. Actually it might be more than half.
Programming a robot is what makes it more than a dumb toy
or remote controlled car.
At Parallax you will find that the robot kits (BoeBot is best)
they have are controlled with a microcontroller (BS2) that is very easy to program and they have excellent books for how to do so.
ANOTHER route you can take is to try robot programming on a
SIMULATED ROBOT. This way you can learn about programming
a robot and robotics immediately without building a robot neither
from scratch (ages) or a kit (money). You can try playing with
making a robot do interesting things all on a simulated robot.
This way you can learn about what hardware you need on a real robot BEFORE you buy one and build it and then find that it is not the right platform for what you want to do.
This has happened to more people than you might think. They build a robot before they thought about the programming aspect and then long after they have already built the robot find that it is not suitable for the programs they want to do.
It is a lot better to PROTOTYPE your ideas on a simulator and then
port all your work to a real robot.
There is a book that shows you how to do all this that you can buy
from www.amazon.com, the book is called
Robot Programmer’s Bonanza
notice it is the programmer’s equivelent of the builders one.
The book uses a software called RobotBASIC that you can
download for free from www.RobotBASIC.com right now before
you even get the book.
The book and software will teach you A LOT about programming robots and will give you many ideas on robot project from the programming aspect. There is a chapter in the book that shows how to build a REAL robot and how to use the RobotBASIC to control it.
Once you are experienced enough you can then buy the
Builder’s Bonanza book and start with more complicated
projects and ideas.
So in summary, I suggest you proceed in THREE STEPS
1- Buy Robot Programmer’s Bonanza and down load
RobotBASIC and play with the software and simulated robot
and learn from the book about robots all for the price of the book.
2- Go to www.Parallax.com and buy a robot kit (BoeBot) and build it
learn from the book about aspects of electronics and programming
the BS2 microcontroller which you will find easy after step 1 above.
3- Now that you are more experienced with software and electronics
you can start getting into the mechanics and buy the Robot
Builder’s Bonanza. You will find a lot of the concepts in the book
are already familiar to you since you have done steps 1 and 2
above.
After doing steps 1 to 3 you will be an EXPERT PRO in robotics.
Good Luck
Sam
