How the U3-X personal mobility device’s Omni Traction Drive System works
Honda has developed a new personal mobility technology, U3-X with the world’s first drive system that enables movement in all directions. The U3-X is a compact experimental device that fits comfortably between the riders legs, to provide free movement in all directions just as in human walking forward, backward, side-to-side, and diagonally. Honda will continue research and development of the device including experiments in a real-world environment to verify the practicality of the device. This new personal mobility device makes it possible to adjust speed and move, turn and stop in all directions when the rider leans the upper body to shift body weight. This was achieved through application of advanced technologies including Honda’s balance control technology, which was developed through the robotics research of ASIMO, Honda’s bipedal humanoid robot, and the worlds first* omni-directional driving wheel system (Honda Omni Traction Drive System, or HOT Drive System), which enables movement in all directions, including not only forward and backward, but also directly to the right and left and diagonally. In addition, this compact size and one-wheel-drive personal mobility device was designed to be friendly to the user and people around it by making it easier for the rider to reach the ground from the footrest and placing the rider on roughly the same eye level as other people or pedestrians. Key features of U3-X: Free movement just as in human walking 1.Device control …

notice the small wheels that move a rider side to side…. can you imagine how much dirt and hairs will get caught in that?? just think “home vacuum cleaner”
@BlueKrush88 something like it already is in one
It’s still just a wheel. So what if it had mechanics, if you knew how mechatronics works. This stuff is not complex.
‘just’ a wheel?
the wheel itself is probably what man kind called mechanics! it started everything~
i think.
@BlueKrush88 Agreed, that could really paralel park itself
definitely should be used on a car
This sort of stuff has already been invented, it’s just a motorised version of the omni-wheel or meccanum wheel. Wikipedia it.
That’s just a wheel, lol.
its called a gyro stabilizer, check it out sometime.
that “veichle” would just fall over
i dont think its possible to do a stationary 360 degree spin. tell me if im wrong or correct.
this wheel is a smart invention, do they have the technology to put something like this in cars?
sooo if you put this on a vehicle. and you spin out, what is gonna stop the wheels from spinning sideways? cuz i don’t know how you could have a good braking system for that
Impressive engineering.
I was wondering that too.
Now apply this to cars and I won’t have to worry about tight parallel parking anymore =]
You should visit my neck of the woods. The majority of scooter owners are 400 lbs +. Try visiting the ice cream isle at your local walmart. (Be careful, the fat asses tend to speed down that isle)
the scooter store dosent just give away scooters to fat people. There are actually people who cannot walk and need a scooter.
So can the rings rotate and spin at the same time for infinite maneuverability?
or you could and market them your idea
lol you must be a chick
since when is parking hard lol you must be a chick
very wonderful invention. It can be made use of many new vehicle.
My girl friend will get a kick out of the car!
