Well my opinion is it’s still going to be Lewis Hamilton becuase jennson button just got lucky this year and i believe that jennson has a few more years before he retires and lewis has serval years before he even thinks about retireing anytyme soon so i believe lewis hamilton will b McLarens top driver this coming F1 season and going into the future

Button is the number 1 driver…he is the current world champ…how could he be number 2

  • Angel H:

Just take a look back in Mclarens history not only with Lewis but with other driver combinations in the past.
Hakkinen over Coulthard, Prost over Senna, Lewis over Alonso and Kovalainen.
Lewis has always been number 1 since he joined the team. Mclaren decided to keep Lewis over Fernando Alonso. A rookie over a 2 time world champion.
And Heikki played second fiddle to Lewis last year and this year. Jenson will be world champion but will play second fiddle to Lewis.
Mclaren have a history of favouring one driver over another. I think that Lewis will be number 1 there until he leaves the team, and who knows when that might be.

You mean car number or status number?

In car number, Jenson, because he won the WDC, and the WDC always gets to use #1 as their car number regardless of which team they are in (i.e. Alonso in 2007)

As in status number, they’re going to score the same points anyways, but I’ll bet McLaren will have Hamilton over Button for various reasons, but the most important reason being so they don’t have fans pissed off at McLaren for being racist. |=[

Even though Button gets to drive the no.1 car, Hamilton has always been the pereferred one at McLaren. They preferred him over Alonso (who is way better than Button), so Button will also be treated in the same way.

  • IndyCar Dad:

Whoever McLaren thinks will do the best for them. For my money, it’s the veteran Button. But once pre-season testing starts, who knows, Hamilton could blow everybody away, like he did his rookie year.

  • Ron-D:

    Hamilton I think

  • pascal:

    Hands down Lewis Hamilton.

Button may have the #1 on his car, but LH is going to outperform him so badly that the team won’t have a choice but to favor Lewis. (and I don’t even like Lewis Hamilton!!)

  • Luke:

they’ll share the number 1………..if they don’t agree to do it,they will most likely be forced to do it………..there’s too much money to waste if they don’t……….

  • The Love Duck:

Man, I have no idea why McLaren does this to themselves….history repeats itself in nefarious ways. They’ve been down this road before with Senna and Prost and it was UGLY. I have no idea if Button/Hamilton are best buddies or not, but with one championship a piece, things could get dicey if it comes down to the wire.

  • Cube:

Well Button is #1 driver. BUT… at McLaren…. they’ll be 2/3 races into the season.. then they will decide within who the real #1 and #2 are… my bet is on golden boy hamilton being the chosen one, as he always is.

  • entwined:

Car number, Jenson of course as he is the reigning champ. Driver status, I think both will have an equal treatment for the first few races then whoever scores the most points as the late part of the season approaches, he would be the number one driver to fight for the championship and the other driver will have no choice but to play a support role. But, should their performances and points would be tight, they will fight and push each other really hard and beat each other.

  • Cavallino Silver:

Angel H you are forgetting the fact that McLaren does tend to switch number 1s when they find a newer one. Prost was favoured over Lauda but when Senna arrived they favoured Senna, and Prost was barely able to beat his teammate although it was in part thanks to the stewards. Prost and Lauda are among the drivers who have been able to ‘beat’ McLaren in that sense.

In any case, Button will wear the number 1 on his car, that is a fact. But we’ll have to see whether or not he can earn McLaren’s preference and if he does so, whether or not it will be enough to beat Hamilton.

I personally don’t think McLaren are still playing favorites after Dennis left. It’s just that Heikki is a decent qualifier but lacks overall race pace and so they give him conservative strategies. And then let’s face it, Hamilton with help or without it, was an exceptional driver from the first race. As much as I dislike him when he talks too much, he can drive.

It really depends on whether you believe Heikki is being sabotaged, which would be stupid on their part considering they wanted that 3rd place badly, or that Hamilton is simply that much better than Heikki.

  • Paul S:

In terms of the assigned number, that’s will easily be Button. In terms of within the team it will be more complicated.

While it has been suggested earlier that Mclaren is prone to switching, this is far from true. History has shown that they favor “their” driver. So while outsiders are often welcomed, and often successful and well supported, they usually lose out to drivers that have deeper roots with the team (such as Senna, with his deep roots with Honda and the Mclaren engineers even though Prost was the more established and successful driver… or more recently with Alonso and Hamilton seeing a very similar situation play out).

So what does this mean today? There is no doubt that Lewis is the number 1 inside the team right now, even though Mclaren will insist there is no number 1 and that both drivers are equal. There is some truth in that claim as far as there will most likely not be anyone going out of their way to make things more favorable for Lewis Hamilton, but he will have the existing relationships with the engineers. The car will almost certainly be developed with his driving style in mind, so while all things are claimed “equal,” he will be starting the season as the team’s number 1 driver.

However, if Button manages to get more out of the car and opens a commanding lead over his teammate, the balance could easily shift; for the moment at least, in the end as long as Lewis works with the team as he has so far, he will most likely be the top guy as long as he’s there and is competitive.

I disagree with a lot of the comments above. While Alonso did say he wasn’t treated fairly at McLaren, I don’t agree with that.
Firstly, he would have undoubtedly been the top paid driver, so I think he wanted team orders to ensure that, which is contrary to official McLaren policy. I think Renault just made better coffee and Briatore kept saying next years car was an absolute winner.
I think Button will initially get the preference because without him they wouldn’t have such a prestigious garage position on pitlane.
In addition, I’m hoping the management will want to be perceived as being “flexible” and that they can handle having Hamilton + 1 other top driver, and it won’t be good if they are perceived as being the other way around.
So my pick is if Button is doing about as well as Hamilton, then he will remain number one driver. If he starts to misbehave or perform poorly, then he won’t.

  • Chris T:

Hamilton has been with McLaren since he was 13 so i think he will be better because the team will still treat Hamilton as the Number 1 driver.

It will be like Hamilton and Alonso.Well sort of
