McLaren makes the chassis and Mercedes makes the engine, and puts a lot of money into the team as an advertising medium. Beyond that, McLaren has a freelance design center for various non-F1 projects and Mercedes uses them for their special expertise. Then Mercedes gets to advertise that its road cars have some McLaren design input, which helps sell their cars.
Keep in mind, this is the short answer.
Mclaren builds the chasy and merc builds the engine. Allthou this has only recently happend, merc use to buy engines from Ilmor Engineering to supply to the F1 team.
In general they work together to build supercars such as the SLR.
Just out of intrest the Mclaren F1 road car had a BMW engine.
