Top Gear Season 15 Preview Richard Hammond Drives Aston Martin Rapide Review in Pictures HD Song: Drake- The Search (Instrumental) Enjoy & Comment! Richard’s Rapide The Rapide – the four-door, four-seater Aston Martin packing 470bhp from a 6.0-litre V12 – has landed. Richard Hammond asks who’s it actually for? Despite appearances to the contrary – actually, you might have caught some of the quite urgent media discussion concerning various economic and fiscal implosions throughout the world recently – it turns out that we are bloody minted after all. Car companies clearly think so. They’ve decided that big, fast, expensive saloons and big, fast, expensive coupes just aren’t enough. So we get big, fast expensive coupe-ish four-door saloons and five-door hatches to spend our money on. Witness the Porsche Panamera, the upcoming Audi A7 four-door coupe and the older Merc CLS, not to mention Jag’s XF and XJ, and the Audi A5 Sportback and BMW 5 Series GT hatches. Car companies wouldn’t make them if we didn’t need to buy them. So that’s proof: we’re minted. This new Rapide is a four-door version of Aston’s DB9 V12 coupe, built on the same chassis but extended by nearly a foot in the wheelbase and just over a foot overall. That’s a lot. Although, obviously, calling it a DB9 LWB wouldn’t have the same poetic ring as the Rapide. Now, clearly, it could be seen as a cynical exploitation of a gap in the market. Was Dr Bez’s DB9/Vantage modular chassis envisaged as a four-door saloon
