The new McLaren MP4-26s diffuser is made of titanium using a technique called ‘prototyping’
———-”Another change is that the diffuser is now made in titanium (highly resistant to heat), using a quick prototyping technique.” quoted from Formula1.com
It says that titanium is highly resistant to heat, but what does the prototyping do? And isn’t titanium heavier than carbon fiber? What are the benefits of making the diffuser out of prototyped titanium?

No idea about the weight, but because of the loss of double diffuser, teams are now trying to claim back the loss of downforce by utilizing the exhaust gas
One idea is to blow the hot exhaust gas across the diffuser or even to the bottom area of the lower wing element. Different teams are trying different stuff. I think both McLaren and Ferrari are blowing their exhaust gas towards the diffuser, while Red Bull are actually channeling it to the side of the floor
Regardless, the diffusers are being roasted by the hot exhaust gas, so the need for a more heat resisting materials are there.
I don’t know the exact details of how the hot gas and its effect when they are cooled helps generate downforce, but you could search around for the concept of “blown diffuser”.
