the SLR is faster in straight line but CGT is quicker on track just like in top gear. Both have mind blowing sound engines and it will be hard to choose a one from them

@bmw318racer not really clarkson tested them in a track in one of his dvds (not topgear) and the results are exaclty the same.
@FSMNoodlyAppendage The torque is more for the V8.
Typical lame comparison: Roads are not just comprised of just straights.
On a REAL road or track with a combination of curves and straights, the Porsche would have the SLR for lunch.

@FSMNoodlyAppendage Yes The SLR Will Monster The GT In A Straight But When Top Gear Tested Them Both Around The Track And after multiple attempts, the Porsche beat the SLR-McLaren by just over a second (1:19.8 vs. 1:20.9[8]). However, on a separate race around their short track, the SLR was fractionally quicker than the Carrera GT.

Even with the best driver in the world, the Carrera GT will lose to the SLR in straight line 99 out of 100 times.
The SLR just makes too much torque, thanks to its supercharger. In a straight line it’s one of the fastest things you can buy.
The CGT is a mid-engine, lightweight track performer. Conversely, around a curvy track the SLR would lose to the Carrera GT 99 out of 100 times.

porsche is better if your 10, mercedes is better if your 100, both are good for hollywood stars. unfortunately, both lindsey lohan and paris hilton bought SLRs, kinda ruined its reputation. They couldnt handle the CGT. haha. both are sexy as fuck though.

@T3HNZ0 well, the british can engineer but they are always chaotic and keep changing their minds about things. This is why british industry fails so much. It’s chaos. Reliability & other things are not generally high up on a the british priority list, so we can only shine briefly & once in a while. For mass production, discipline for continuous high quality output, the German mentality is far better suited & explains the success of their car industry & the fact that Germany is an export leader.
@alexandcheetahs indeed, and it sold badly because it was just far too expensive. Why they charged some 300.000 Euro for such a car beats me. It seems Mercedes realised this too and so production of high end sports cars is 100% back in Germany. The GBP at the time was also 1:1.5 vs the Euro also adding to the dreadful (unreasonable) cost.
