If it wasn’t for the new gimmicks hip-hop would have passed from the public consciousness 10 years ago.
Even when hip-hop was “raw” it was still all about gimmicks. You think Raekwon was actually a international drug lord, or Nas? The only difference between then and now is that their gimmick was how bad@ss and rich they were, and now it’s just about how rich they are.
