…for having two sophomores as their race drivers and lacking the expertise of a seasoned driver in setting up the car…
Hamilton was never happy with his car set up in bahrain…
do you think they are missing Alonzo’s expertise?
Best answer:
Answer by Lewis rocks
no not really. I think they are doing fine. Lewis mucked up a bit but Heikki is pretty consistent. Lewis will be back on form when they reach Europe, after all being English, he’ll be used to driving in the rain

I think it may cost them in terms of long-term development of the car, because between them they only have a season each of F1 racing, which isn’t enough really… I think they are learning as they are going along which will stand them in good stead later on this year, but perhaps not right now… experience counts for a lot in F1…
Alonso leaving McLaren was the worst thing to happen to McLaren since Ron Dennis, the “CHEATER” took over
i think it might be a few different factors that contribute to mclarens performance, sure 2 sophomore drivers may have a factor, add to that BMW’s improved pace and the fact that they had to design and build a car with no noticeable Ferrari influence,
but lets get real, a win and a third, both drivers tied for 3rd in the drivers championship only 5 points behind 1st, and 3rd in the constructors championship, only 2 pts behind first, isn’t exactly a disastrous start to the season i mean we are talking about being only one kimi DNF away from first place in both championships
I think they’re doing remarkably well, considering they lost their chief designer, Mike Coughlan, and the use of their Ferrari reverse engineering. Keeping Alonso wasn’t an option, as he clearly couldn’t handle being in a team where they allowed his teammate to beat him. Besides, look at Renault this year and you’ll know Alonso wasn’t the magic bullet that made McLaren competitive last year. It was most likely Ferrari’s hard work.
I suppose McLaren could have shopped for another driver with some seasoning, maybe Button or Webber, but maybe not. If they were under contract to other teams, and with McLaren’s budget dinged from having to pay the fine for being caught cheating and lying about it, maybe McLaren didn’t feel it would be the best use of their resources to make a cash transfer to Honda or RedBull. They probably needed new silk tea cozies for their palacial motorhome or to repair damage done to Paragon when James Bond showed up with guns blazing expecting to find a villain working towards world domination. Oh well.
Yeah, thats what i thought when i first heard they were getting Heikki over the more experienced drivers as a teammate but they do have Pedro Dela rosa as their test driver so i guess he helps out a bit with that.
in a way they are handicapped…
experience is experience….
you learn from the veterans…
Last year, they had their shot at the championship, but instead of backing Alonso up, they race against Alonso instead. They build the entire team around Lewis.
Well, Lewis is still a new driver. Isn’t it too early to build a team around him? Afterall, unlike Michael Schumacher when he went over to Ferrari with already 2 championship wins in his pocket, Lewis had none. He’s still very much a new driver with lots of experience left to learn
But Mclaren decided to sideline Alonso. Now without that experience 2 times world champion (similar situation with Michael Schumacher when he went to Ferrari) they are struggling with 2 new young inexperience driver
If they wanted to build the team around a driver, is should have been Alonso. Lewis still have a lot to learn before he can be a great complete F1 driver.
Now he’s not a great driver, just a fast one. If everything goes well for him, he wins
If not, he struggles at the middle of the grid, make mistakes and fumbles.
I think Maclaren has got the pick of the bunch in terms of team mates.
They are two talented drivers who despite their age and experience are a credit to the team. lewis is having a bit of a wobble but I don’t think that this wil be for long and Hakki is getting more impressive and hungry. On the Alonso question,
Maclaren is Alonso’s loss .
I don’t think so. Car set up is determined by the driver himself. Maybe Hamilton could not figure out the best set up for those conditions. It happens to other drivers as well. Heikki and Hamilton may only be doing their second year racing in F1 but they are pretty good.
I don’t think McLaren misses Alonso that much. They have a very experienced de la Rosa as a test driver. However, I must say that i was surprised that Heikki was chosen to partner Hamilton. I had thought that they would get a more experienced driver. But if things work out for them, they have made a good decision
