These Are The Guys That Will Take You To Space… In 2014… For $95K [TCTV]

Screen shot 2012-06-07 at 7.59.40 PM

It’s in every science fiction book and movie since forever. Humans — the ordinary non-astronaut kind, like you and I — going up into space like it’s no big deal. And it’s generally believed that one day, eventually, space flight will become mainstream.

But alas, the day draws nigh. XCOR Aerospace and Space Expedition Corporation (SXC) have introduced the first aircraft that can endure frequent repeat trips to sub-orbital levels before tuckering out: the Lynx. Since the Lynx, a small fighter-esque plane that only holds two people, can make multiple trips a day back and forth to space, space flight becomes affordable enough for anyone to take the trip.

Well, not necessarily anyone. By “affordable,” I mean $ 95,000 for a ticket.

You’ll co-pilot the mission yourself, since there’s only space for two. The flight will last four or five minutes, over various spots on the planet, wherein the Lynx will flip upside down to give you a full view of our lovely rock.

According to Chief Test Pilot Rick Searfoss, who has traveled up into space with NASA three times as a Space Shuttle Commander, you’ll be able to see the curve of the earth and the thin blue line that separates our atmosphere from the black vacuum of space.

And though the Lynx doesn’t go past sub-orbital levels (around 100 kilometers), you’ll still feel entirely weightless.

The company has already sold over 175 tickets, and at $ 95,000 a pop, they’ll turn a profit immediately once they begin regular flights with private citizens. For now, we’re only in the testing phase, with commercial flights beginning no later than 2014.

Here’s an animation of the Lynx:

AMD shows off LiveBox mini desktop based on one of its Fusion chips (video)

AMD Livebox

Between the Raspberry Pi and the new Chromebox, we’ve been spending more time than usual lately talking about miniature desktops. Until now, though, AMD hasn’t really entered the discussion; all of the models we’ve tested have featured either an ARM chip or Intel processor. So we were intrigued, then, when we found this mini PC hanging out at the company’s Computex booth. It’s called the LiveBox, and it runs one of AMD’s X86-based Fusion chips. Before we get into specifics, though, have a gander at our hands-on photos and check out that funky design. In addition to being tiny, it has a two-pronged power connector attached, allowing you to plug it directly into an outlet. We’re not sure individual consumers will prefer that cordless design, but we can see it translating well in businesses and schools — precisely the sorts of places where AMD thinks these boxes might find a home.

Again, the LiveBox is based on a Fusion APU (a 1GHz C-60 chip, to be exact), complemented by 1GB of RAM and Radeon HD 6200 graphics. As for storage, the unit on display had a Samsung-made 64GB SSD. Take a tour around the edges and you’ll find two USB 2.0 ports (no USB 3.0), a Gigabit Ethernet jack and an HDMI socket. There’s also a memory card reader, a SIM slot for quad-band 3G (WCDMA) and Bluetooth 4.0, in case you want to pair it with any wireless peripherals. As you can see in the video below, those modest internals are enough to output smooth 1080p video, which means this setup should suffice for basic things like email, web surfing and YouTube. Unfortunately, the machine on display was running Windows 7, not 8, which is a bummer. We also wish we knew more about the target price: AMD won’t say what brand will be selling this, or when it will be available. Until then, it’s tough to say where the LiveBox fits in. But hey, hands-on photos and video can’t hurt, right?

Yer A Wizard, Sony: PlayStation Introduces Wonderbook, The AR Ebook For Kids Complete With Harry Potter Content

sony-e3-6-2

Although the vast majority of Sony gaming content is focused on adult/teen titles, a new title called Wonderbook is particularly interesting. Using an augmented-reality book, kids can turn pages and watch themselves and the book animated on the screen. They’re creating educational and gaming content, including unique science and history stories.

Arguably these are little more than a big-screen series of tablet e-books, but with the addition of content by J.K. Rowling and others, this Sony effort shows a definite push towards younger gamers. The title, called Book of Spells, brings interactive fiction to the TV and allows you to turn the pages of a “real” spell book complete with moral poems at the end.

The book also interacts with the PlayStation Move wand to allow you to cast spells on the book in real life. The so-called books will require readers (players?) to interact with the book. With the Harry Potter title, Book of Spells, dragons leap out of the book and fly around the room with a bit of AR magic. It apparently even catches on fire requiring the user to put it out with their hands, leaving soot behind that needs to be wiped off.

Look for the Book of Spells and other Wonderbook titles this coming Fall and expect sales to begin around the holiday season.

One more place to play Farmville or one more reason to quit Facebook?

Perhaps there aren’t enough places for you to play Words With Friends or FrontierVille, who are we to judge? Maybe what the world needs right now is playable Angry Birds in your Facebook news feed. Instead of just an invitation to join Cow Clicker, maybe you need to be able to play it straight from the homepage. Well, now you can. And that’s all we have to say about that.

Kyocera’s Urbano Progresso tissue-conducting smartphone launching in Japan on May 30th

bone phone lead 1020

Kyocera’s Urbano Progresso Android 4.0 smartphone and its Smart Sonic Receiver tissue conduction are coming to Japanese carrier AU on May 30th. In case you missed our hands-on with a prototype at CES in January, or with the finished phone at AU’s summer lineup event earlier this month, the phone trades a traditional speaker design for a vibrating display that conducts sound up your ear canal. The new speaker design makes conversations much easier to hear in loud environments, and improves audibility for the hearing impaired. The Urbano Progresso is powered by a dual-core Snapdragon S2 (MSM8655) running at 1.4GHz, and includes Japanese features like infrared, FeliCa for mobile payments, and an 8.1-megapixel camera. And if anyone is…

Apple Stores rumored carrying Nest thermostats, we play it cool (to exactly 71F)

Image

Tony Fadell might have left Apple to make the Nest Learning Thermostat, but it may be the case that Apple hasn’t completely left him. If we go by a pair of rumors, Nest’s Internet-savvy climate control could soon be in Apple Stores, presumably across the US, for the same $ 249 as it costs to splurge for one through Nest itself. We’re definitely skeptical — home appliances and automation aren’t really Apple’s strong suits, and Nest has already declined to comment — but 9to5 Mac has heard that the thermostats are already in Apple’s inventory system. If the reports are at all true, there won’t be long to wait before you can buy a smart energy system while you’re shopping for a new iPhone case.

PSA: Watch the SpaceX Dragon’s first attempt at docking right now! (video)

Image

SpaceX’s Dragon is rapidly approaching its historic meeting with the International Space Station. It’s due to begin its first docking procedure at 7:30am ET, and NASA is streaming footage from both the ground crew, the ISS and the private craft itself. Once within a safe range, the station will extend its robotic arm and draw the Dragon in to dock — with the hatch being opened tomorrow. We’ve embedded the video after the break so you can watch along at home, popcorn in hand.
