During BlackBerry Live this week we got to speak with Vivek Bhardwaj, BlackBerry’s Head of Software, about the future of BB10. In light of the the platform’s first major software update rolling out to its devices, we asked about the plans for future releases. Bhardwaj told us that the plan is for them to come at a regular cadence of one major code update per year, with other, incremental updates for specific devices sprinkled in as needed. A particular focus is to do so while delivering devs fully realized hardware and to avoid fragmentation in the code base — making it easier to create BB10 apps.
While he wouldn’t dish details about features coming to BB10 in those updates, Bhardwaj did explain that he’s working on making BB10 a platform particularly suited for use not only in cars, but also in the healthcare and financial services industries. That focus is a part of the mobile computing ethos espoused by CEO Thorsten Heins meant to have BB10 devices be users’ personal, portable computing terminal that is simply plugged into a screen — whether it’s a desktop monitor, a car or somewhere else — that delivers a uniform experience. When asked whether those screens would include TVs, Bhardwaj didn’t rule it out, but he did say that home experiences weren’t a priority because it’s a crowded space and BB10 “is all about getting things done.” As a result, the number one focus is building out a compelling automotive platform, with healthcare and financial services coming in a close second. So, folks thinking BB10 was BlackBerry betting on consumers instead of the enterprise, think again. The more things change, the more they seem to stay the same — at least when the folks in Waterloo are involved.

Tim Cook coffee date fetches $610,000 in charity auction

The Charitybuzz auction offering a chance to meet and have coffee with Apple CEO Tim Cook has ended with a final bid of $ 610,000. In all, 86 bids were placed for the opportunity to sit down with Cook (and a friend of the winner’s choosing) for between 30 and 60 minutes at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters. With such large chunks of cash at stake, Charitybuzz required independent bank qualifications once bids crossed the $ 500,000 mark. Proceeds from the record-tying auction (a Lamborghini Roadster went for the same total earlier this year) will go to The RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights. The coffee rendezvous was valued at $ 50,000 according to auction terms — travel costs not included — but that figure was eclipsed soon after…

Birthday Cake w/ Old School Video Games On Each Side

This is the birthday cake made by Wedding Cakes By Nicole featuring Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Tetris and Frogger scenes on each side, and Pong on the top. And if you think I wouldn’t peel all those characters off and eat them you are incorrect. Dead incorrect. If you were a computer game you ‘d be blinking GAME OVER right now.
Dimity asked me to create a cake for her Fiance, Stephen, who adores “old-fashioned” video game.
I created a 3 tier square cake, with each of the sides representing a preferred retro platform game. Topped off with a game off Pong, with the score showing Stephen’s “30″ years. The board had a joystick, buttons and coin slot.
Man, I would have gotten rid of to have that birthday cake. Hell, I would have pushed someone down the stairs to have ANY cake. And choked somebody for a single pal to even keep in mind my birthday. Do you even understand which month it is? \* waving knife \* TELL ME WHICH MONTH IT IS. \* journeys and falls on knife \* I simply … desired … a shock celebration.

Home Console Gaming May Suffer Death By A Thousand Cuts, Rather Than A Major Revolution

The Ouya is making its way out to backers even now (though my shipping notification still hasn’t arrived. Grrr.) and judging by early impressions, it’s no silver bullet to take down behemoths like Sony and Microsoft. The $ 99, Android powered console still isn’t fully formed exactly, but it’s doubtful that between now and June 25 it’ll take on giant-killer proportions. Likewise the recently-announced BlueStacks Android gaming console, which features a subscription-based pricing model, probably won’t alone topple the giants.
But combined, these and a slew of other devices including the GameStick, smart TVs from manufacturers, Steam Boxes, and even Google and Apple hardware are eating away at what was once a fairly exclusive field. It seems a lot of people are waiting for a watershed moment to signal a significant shift away from traditional console gaming to a new paradigm, but increasingly, it looks likely that what we’ll see instead is an erosion that more closely resembles glacial shift, but on a less geological time scale.
There’s evidence to suggest that console gaming is already losing significant ground, like quarterly results from Nintendo that show a dramatic decline in consumer interest in the recently-launched Wii U console. And while Sony saw its first full-year profit in half a decade, most of the good news was on the smartphone side, and PlayStation sales fell for the year. Microsoft is still doing fairly well with the Xbox 360, but growth of key accessories like the Kinect have slowed with time.
Slower Kinect sales are a good bellwether for the industry’s overall health, if only because it and devices like it are where console makers are turning to try to inject some fresh life into a market that had recently started to look fairly stale. To some extent, Kinect, Move and other gimmicks like the screen of the 3DS are an answer to incursions by mobile gaming and other alternatives. Just like point-and-shoot cameras needed differentiating features like long zooms to prove themselves relative to smartphone cameras, video games needed something new to reel in new buyers.
The new crop of challengers to the console gaming market, including Ouya and the new BlueStacks GamePop console, risks getting discounted by critics as just another round of devices like the GP2X Wiz or the Gizmondo, which had limited appeal and then faded into the background of video games history as little more than a minor footnote. But that’s taking too short-term and dismissive a view on what’s currently happening in the video game space. It’s true that, as ardent console gamers continually remind me, there will always be a demand for that type of content.
Increasingly, however, there’s a growing contingent of players that are fine saying, “if I can get it on my phone, why do I need it anywhere else?” and that’s a market that’s ripe for a living room transition like the ones being attempted by Ouya and BlueStack. It’s easy to discount these ahead of their full consumer launch, and I don’t expect them to have an immediate impact on console sales, but they are signs of a sure shift, and one that won’t go away, even if doesn’t provide the sort of bomb shock disruption that we’re so fond of identifying and championing.

The White House is reportedly close to backing an FBI plan that would simplify online wiretapping by providing for significant fines against web services that refuse law enforcement requests. The New York Times reports that companies could face fines of up to $ 25,000 day if they fail to comply with judge-issued wiretap orders.
Citing officials familiar with the deliberations, The Times reports that while the FBI’s original idea would have mandated every internet communications service to build in a backdoor for wiretaps, the modified proposal would instead focus on companies that don’t comply with judges’ orders.
