Amazon Adds KF8 Support, Parental Controls, And A High-Contrast Font To Their Cheapest Kindle

kindle79

Amazon’s $ 79 Kindle may be the least flashy of the the bunch, but the Seattle company is starting to push out a new software update that adds some much-needed functionality to their cost-conscious e-reader.

One of the biggest additions to the mix is support for Kindle Format 8, Amazon’s relatively new e-book file format. The $ 79 Kindle seems to be bringing up the rear in that respect, as the Kindle Fire, Kindle Touch, and most of the Kindle mobile apps have already been updated to play well with those newer KF8 files.

It may sound like a minor enhancement, but it affords content creators and publishers (among other things) much finer control over the styling and layout of an e-book. As such, it also opens up the $ 79 Kindle to content like comic books that lean heavily on the Kindle Panel View feature, as well as children’s books that use fixed layouts and text popups.

If that wasn’t enough, the update also packs improved parental controls to keep the young ones out of the Kindle Store or the device’s experimental web browser. Also on board is a new, slightly crisper font that Amazon claims will make for a more “paper-like reading experience,” and a new grouping meant solely for dictionaries within the main book listing to help clean up some of the clutter.

All thrilling stuff, no? You can expect your Kindle to get the update via WiFi within a few weeks, but you can always download and install it yourself if you’re the impatient type.

Strappy NFC reader brings interactive smartphone ads to Tokyo subway cars

Strappy NFC

For the past few weeks, commuters on some Tokyo subway lines have been seeing a steady stream of interactive smartphone ads, thanks to a new product called Strappy. Created by Shunkosha, a Japanese printing company, Strappy is a rectangular plastic covering that attaches to the straps hanging from subway car ceilings. Within this covering is a reader that supports the FeliCA NFC standard — the same contactless system behind Pasmo, Tokyo’s rechargeable subway cards. Users who place their smartphones over the blue boxes will have their browsers directed to a URL with ads, coupons, or other marketing materials.

Of course, the entire system demands a strong underground data connection, but that’s not as imposing a hurdle as it may seem,…

Nokia Lumia 610 review

Nokia Lumia 610 hero (1024px)

Microsoft and Nokia’s work on Windows Phone Tango devices, to lower device specification requirements, has led to the Lumia 610, a low-end handset primarily designed for emerging markets like China. Although it will be available in a number of other countries, Nokia’s Lumia 610 is clearly designed to lower the entry point for potential Windows Phone customers and help entice shoppers who would typically opt for non-smartphone handsets. With plastic styling, 256MB of RAM, and an 800MHz processor, Nokia’s latest Lumia is a far cry from its polycarbonate siblings — the 800 and 900 — but the handset will arrive in the UK on £15 ($ 23) per month contracts, making it an attractive offering for those curious about Windows Phone.

Got Money To Burn? iPad Prototype Appears On eBay, Shows Off Its Two Dock Connectors

H92Sn - Imgur

Every gadget that graces our shelves goes through plenty of tweaks and changes during its design phase, but it isn’t too often that we get an actual glimpse of those scrapped iterations. It can be tremendously cool to see what our stuff could have looked like in some alternate timeline, and a new eBay listing reveals a peculiar iPad that may have been.

The listing is for an early first-generation iPad prototype, and unlike the final model it sports two dock connectors, allowing the iPad to be docked in either portrait or landscape mode.

Astute readers may recall that some of Apple’s earlier iPad-related patents pointed to a dual-docking device, and nearly three years later, we’re finally getting our first real look at one. Long story short, it looks just as dumb as you would expect it to. While the ability to dock the iPad in either orientation is arguably useful, it makes for a design that isn’t as clean or as thoughtful as Apple is (usually) known for.

It probably goes without saying that this early 16GB iPad is more of a conversation piece than a fully functional gadget, though. The seller notes that the touchscreen doesn’t work properly thanks to some funky digitizer issues, though it’s possible that someone with enough gumption (and the right tools) may be able to get it running again.

The prototype also runs an early build of iOS 3.2 along with Apple’s Switchboard hardware testing suite. It’s nothing that will make its eventual owner’s life any easier, but it certainly lends a bit of credence to the notion that it is actually some in-house Apple hardware instead of a carefully crafted hoax.

Between this and that Atari-era Steve Jobs memo, Apple aficionados have plenty of Cupertino memorabilia to lust after. Of course, it’ll cost you a pretty penny should you try to score this piece of iPad history — the prototype currently sits with a $ 4,800 bid, but it could be yours for a cool $ 10,000 if the whole bidding-on-things bit isn’t your style.

Sweating The Small Stuff: Sotheby’s Selling Original Steve Jobs Note About Atari Circuit Improvements

sjmemo4

The auction house Sotheby’s is selling an official memo from Steve Jobs to Atari about improving the World Cup Football game. The pages – stamped and signed by Jobs himself – describe circuit diagrams and paddle layouts. Delightfully, the stamp says “All-One Farm Design” and features a Buddhist mantra, “gate gate paragate parasangate bodhi svahdl.” As you do.

If you’re thinking of picking this up you’d best have about $ 10,000 to $ 15,000 handy – although bidding could get fierce. Quoth MacWorld:

The June 15th, 2012 auction features a 5 page memo sent to Atari employee Steve Bristow by Steve Jobs. This memo describes changes that could be made to Atari’s World Cup Soccer arcade game. These changes were designed to add play variety to the game and to extend the ‘shelf life’ for arcade operators. While the memo is typed on Atari letterhead, it also features a stamp imprinted with the name of Steve Job’s company at the time “All-One Farm Design” and the address of the Jobs family garage( and the birthplace of Apple Computer). The memo features a circuit diagram and a hand written addendum.

This is the earliest know documentation produced by Steve Jobs and predates the founding of Apple computer by almost two years. No other documents from Steve Jobs time at Atari are known to exist. Sotheby’s sold another Steve Jobs document in December, 2011 for $ 1.6 million.

If you’re really feeling spendy, you can plop down $ 180,000 on an original Apple I circuit board, presumably in mint condition. Get cracking and don’t forget: Sabbe satta sukhi hontu.
