Samsung’s Wallet app launches in Korea

Samsung's Wallet app launches in Korea

Samsung showed off its Wallet app to developers earlier this year, and now Korean customers can download it onto compatible Android devices from the company’s own app market. Currently it only appears to collect credit card info, which customers can then use to pay for goods and services at online merchants, verified by a one-time password or PIN. Clearly aimed at both Google Wallet and Apple’s Passbook, Samsung plans to add a few features we’ve seen in Passbook that will make tickets, membership cards and coupons accessible all in one place. According to the translated press release it’s out for the Galaxy S 4, Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Note II, Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy S II HD LTE, although whether it will be featured in a Gangnam Style 2 video remains unknown.

Neverware Raises $1M To Keep Schools’ Computers Quick Like Lightning

neverware_logo

There is no sadder moment than the one where you realize it’s time to upgrade your computer. The load times are too slow, the battery no longer holds a charge, and it’s just too damn heavy. Now, imagine a school with dozens of outdated computers, and think just how bad that moment of realization can really be.

Neverware, a company based out of NY, is aiming to change all that with a turnkey solution that automatically boosts performance of old computers for a low monthly fee. Obviously, demand for this type of service is high, especially in the education industry, which is why Neverware has just closed a $ 1 million round from investors that include Thrive Capital, Khosla Ventures, General Catalyst, Collaborative Fund, and Nihal Mehta.

Founder Jonathan Hefter started Neverware back in 2011 and launched in January 2013 with around $ 600K in seed funding. Since then, the company has been working to evangelize the product to NYC schools, and the response has been great. According to Hefter, Neverware’s latest seed round is somewhat of an emergency raise, considering that the demand from schools is much higher than expected.

Hefter explained that they expected to sign on with between five and seven schools for the first semester, starting in January. However, they’ve blown way past that number and seen around 3x the customer sign-ups. According to Neverware, most of the new seed round will go toward smart engineering hires, as Hefter looks to double the seven-man team with more employees who care about what Neverware is doing.

Neverware works by setting up a Juicebox 100 in the schools. That piece of hardware integrates with the school’s network to bring automation and intelligence to the system. The Neverware virtualization technology then boosts performance to each computer, giving kids the access they need to actually get things done.

Schools pay an adjustable fee per month, per computer, and the Juicebox comes free.

“There is a huge challenge in deploying software on appliances across a wide variety of networks that we do not control,” said Hefter. “In order to be a reliable solution, we engineer an incredible amount of intelligence and automation into our system that allows it to function in many types of network environments that schools might have and recover from a wide range of network-related issues, without any associated downtime. These are engineering challenges that you simply don’t face when you’re running a website on uniform Amazon instances in the cloud.”

For now, Neverware is focused on expanding within the greater New York area, and will eventually expand beyond that into new regions.

This is the Modem World: Digital junk food

Each week Joshua Fruhlinger contributes This is the Modem World, a column dedicated to exploring the culture of consumer technology.

DNP This is the Modem World TKTKTK

I’m hanging out in Atlanta right now, getting ready to speak at Digital Summit 2013 about things you’re probably not terribly interested in. Most importantly, I’m sitting at a bar and just ordered what looks to be a monster of a burger called the “Hot Mess” at a place called Park Bar near my hotel. Despite my disdain for online review sites, it was either this via Yelp or the hotel bar and, well, I find hotel bars depressing.

It’s also pretty clear that the only reason I ordered the Hot Mess is because my wife isn’t here to give me a hard time about it. No, I’m not a kept man, but I respect her knowledge of health and try to let her guide me most of the time. But when I’m on the road, I sometimes let all bets fall to the floor so that daddy can dig into a burger uninterrupted.

Tough Times: Former Air Force One Plane Up For Auction

air-force-one-auction.jpg

Most likely to dig us out of this huge deficit, the government is auctioning a former Flying force One flight, which it will probably change with an additional Air Force One flight that’s more recent and 10x more pricey. You know, I wish we might select where our tax dollars went since I ‘d desire mine simply flushed down the shitter and the video broadcast over the web.

It’s rarely we get to sell a piece of history like this, however GSA Auctions is offering this plane that flew Head of states Ford, Carter, Reagan, Shrub, Clinton & Bush (as well as the Vice-President, First Lady, Cabinet secretaries, 4-star generals, admirals, foreign dignitaries and even more).

Enjoyable fact: did you understand a plane is technically just referred to as Air Force One if there’s a head of state aboard? Otherwise it’s just a fancy aircraft. Quick forward to some bad funny flick about a dumb however adorable head of state stepping on and off the airplane shouting, “Flying force One, routine airplane! Flying force One, routine airplane!” When I close my eyes I see Adam Sandler or among the Wayans brothers.

Thanks to E V I L A R E S, who’s so wicked he’s plotting how he can take over the world from 35,000-feet even as we talk.

T-Mobile quietly bumps up-front price of an iPhone 5 by $50 to $149.99

Iphone-tmobile-logo_1020_large

When T-Mobile first announced its “uncarrier” iPhone 5 plans in March, it touted a down payment of $ 99.99 and two years of $ 20 monthly payments, adding up to a surprisingly cheap $ 579.99, or $ 70 less than its AT&T counterpart. Unfortunately, that deal was apparently too good to last. TMoNews reports that the $ 99.99 pricing was apparently a one-month-only promotional offer, set to expire on May 13th. That’s been borne out by T-Mobile’s own store, which now sells the iPhone 5 for a down payment of $ 149.99 and a total price of $ 629.99 — eliminating most of the savings on the phone itself, though you’ll still pay less up-front than on other carriers.

On its own, a price bump wouldn’t necessarily be surprising or reprehensible: phone sales…
