Intel to show third-gen Ultrabooks at Computex, makes USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt a necessity

When Intel first unveiled its grand plans for Ultrabooks at last year’s Computex, many of the fireworks were consciously reserved for Ivy Bridge-based variants in 2012 — well, they’re here. This year’s show in Taipei will show off the third generation of the skinny, MacBook Air-inspired platform, and Intel is toughening up the design requirements in the process. The thickness requirements are the same as last year, at 18mm for systems with screens under 14 inches and 21mm for bigger machines, but high-speed ports are now mandatory to get that coveted “Ultrabook” label and the full marketing weight of Intel’s $ 300 million Ultrabook Fund: if a PC doesn’t have either USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt, it’s out of the running. Intel also wants security built-in, rather than optional, as well as guarantees that a system is quick and responsive when it’s fully awake. Not that this would be terribly hard with the low-voltage Ivy Bridge processors launching at the same time, mind you.
Just to reinforce the importance of it all, Intel is noting that the flood of Ultrabooks is about to pick up in a big way as the category hits the mainstream. We were promised 75 Ivy Bridge Ultrabooks this year in a presentation back at CES; that number’s now up to 110, 30 of which will be Windows 8-friendly touchscreen models and another 10 opting for the convertible tablet route. At least some of those lightweight portables should pop up at Computex next week, and you can be sure we’ll be investigating as many of them as we can to see just how well Intel’s partners have advanced the game.

Lenovo LePhone K800 launches, officially brings Medfield to China

At CES 2012, Lenovo was the first to announce a Medfield-powered smartphone: the K800. And while it was the first to be unveiled, it couldn’t beat the Lava Xolo X900 to market. Lenovo’s not too worried about that, however, as the K800 has arrived in China right on schedule, having originally aimed for a Q2 launch and later refining the timeframe to the end of May. The fruits of Intel’s labor can be had for the grand ‘ol retail price of RMB 3,299 ($ 524), which gets you a 1.6GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM, Android 2.3, a 4.5-inch 720p display, an 8MP rear camera and 16GB of internal storage. We haven’t heard any news of the phone reaching across the Pacific, but we’re sure that won’t stop the most insistent of you from grabbing a unit through alternative methods, right?

A prototype first-generation iPad equipped with two dock connectors has made its way onto eBay with a starting price of $ 4,800. The unit looks to be authentic, and despite its astronomical price, it is nearly the same as the first-generation iPad — same screen, same internals. It’s long been rumored that Apple was considering putting a landscape-mounted docking port on the original iPad. As Joshua Topolsky reported at Engadget in 2010, the dual-dock design was scrapped at the last minute in favor of the simpler layout we’re now all familiar with. Other than its unique hardware, the iPad is running SwitchBoard, Apple’s internal diagnostic software. If you’re interested in purchasing the prototype for yourself, you should also take note…

It’s a strange feeling, receiving such a keenly anticipated phone to review. The hubbub of launch events, hands-on previews and heated debates suddenly dies away, leaving you with one small and intensely silent cardboard box. In this instance, the packaging contained the “marble white” version of the Galaxy S III (not the more daring “pebble blue”) alongside one burning question: apart from all the hype, do this handset’s paper credentials translate into a product that is worthy of serious cash and a 24-month commitment?
Those credentials are certainly more subtle than those of other recent devices. There’s no unusual camera, stand-out display or unibody build. Instead, we get an abstract design statement about the phone being “inspired by nature” alongside a list of incremental hardware improvements such as a quad-core processor, as well as fresh additions to Samsung’s customized Android 4.0 skin. As it turns out, these specs forgo immediate swagger in favor of creating a solid workhorse of a smartphone that is intent on attracting a long-term following.
