Denon SC2900 DJ Media player gets a euro price and summer launch date

Wherever there’s a teaser video, full product info is sure to follow. Denon‘s decided to stop being so coy, and got its new SC2900 DJ media player fully out in the open. We pretty much got to see most of what’s on offer, including that 7-inch non-motorized platter, and slew of format-playing options (mp3 / audio CD, USB drives, direct from laptop,) but we didn’t know when, and how much. The answers to those questions? For Europeans, July, and €800 plus tax. That’s about $ 997 by conversion, but the actual US price will come as and when availability here’s confirmed.

TI demos Windows RT on OMAP 4470, we go hands-on (video)

It seems like every ARM chip manufacturer wants a piece of Windows 8 here at Computex 2012 — and for good reason. Hot on the heels of Asus’ Tegra 3-equipped Tablet 600 and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4-based development tablet, Texas Instruments is showing Windows RT on its very own OMAP 4470-based system. The 1.5GHz dual-core SoC features a PowerVR SGX544 GPU and leads the competition with a dual-channel memory interface. We chatted with Bill Crean, Product Manager of the OMAP Processor Business Unit who showed us Microsoft’s latest OS running on TI’s development tablet. The demo looked snappy enough, providing some insight about what to expect from some of Toshiba’s upcoming devices. No word yet on a quad-core version. As the middle child from Sony Mobile’s NXT family, the Xperia P steps out from behind the Xperia S’ shadow with its own 4-inch screen — and a touch of WhiteMagic. Screen technology aside, the phone’s design follows a path very similar to Sony’s latest flagship and picks up a few quirks of its own on the way. The see-through button strip is actually touch-sensitive on Sony’s 2012 middle-weight — a curious oversight on the bigger model.
It packs Sony’s 8-megapixel Exmor R camera sensor (likely to be the same one found in the Xperia Arc S), a dual-core 1GHz processor and just under 13GB of user-accessible storage. But there’s one unfortunate Xperia trait here — we’re still playing with Android Gingerbread, even while its ancestors begin to dip their toes into Ice Cream Sandwich. Does anyone want an incrementally smaller Android phone from Sony? And what exactly is WhiteMagic and what does it mean for the battery life?

Cookoo: Move Over, Pebble, There’s A New E-Watch In Town

Although I seriously doubt these things will take off into the stratosphere like the Pebble, the Cookoo watch on Kickstarter has already hit $ 120,000 on a $ 150,000 target, placing it up with the big boys in the crowdsourcing race. The Cookoo is essentially an e-ink watch with a few wireless tricks up its sleeve – namely Bluetooth connectivity that will notify you when you have messages, etc.
The watch costs $ 80 and is far less complex than the Pebble. The watch uses a small CR2032 battery and doesn’t need to be recharged. The best thing? It has a single button on it that can be used to trigger various functions including Facebook checkins, photo taking, and location tagging.
You can also press the Cookoo’s button to find your phone when you’ve lost it.
Now look: I don’t think any of these smart watches are any good, but this one (and the Pebble) look to be the closest to something the general consumer would enjoy using. Wearable tech is hard and getting to work well with everyone’s phone is harder. Time will tell.

The Nest Thermostat Is Now Available At The Apple Store

If any household product deserves a spot in the Apple Store, it’s the Nest Thermostat. Never mind the common denominator of long-time Apple employee, Tony Fadell, the Nest Thermostat exemplifies Apple’s mantra of making technology accessible. The Nest isn’t just a pretty face. Behind the shiny exterior are enough disruptive bits to make thermostat giant, Honeywell, attempt to sue the company out of existence. Starting today, the Nest is now available in Apple’s retail stores and the website.
The Apple Store sells the Nest at its full, $ 249 MSRP — Lowes sells it for the same price. But as the company promises, homeowners should recoup that high price with monthly savings on their utility bill thanks to the Nest’s learning and motion sensing features. Owners can also control the settings from iOS and Android devices, arguably allowing for even more savings.
As The Verge points out, this comes just one day after the Nest headed to the Great White North. Just yesterday, Nest Labs announced Canadian availability of its learning thermostat because, you know, even Canadians deserve lower utility bills by way of a beautiful device.
