This is the Modem World: Some questions about the new Xbox One
Each week Joshua Fruhlinger contributes This is the Modem World, a column dedicated to exploring the culture of consumer technology.

Now that Microsoft has given its quick reveal of the new Xbox One game console / set-top box, we have a pretty good idea of what we should be expecting once the machine comes out. We know how it’ll be controlled; we know what games we’ll be playing on it; and we know how it will keep us connected and entertained.
But we don’t know if people will use all these new things. Are we ready to look at our game consoles as more than a game console? Are we already there? I mean, we all use Netflix on our machines, right? May as well let them run our TV viewing too, right?
Right?

Zivix Announces Wireless iOS Connectivity For The Jamstik MIDI Guitar
When we first met the team from Zivix their wild MIDI guitar, the Jamstik, promised a unique music-making experience thanks to a tether that connected it to a computer or iOS device. In the few short months since CES, however, they’re now preparing to announce that Jamstik works nearly flawlessly over Wi-Fi with iPhones and iPads, thereby reducing the need for a physically tethered device.
The Jamstik, which has surpassed its Indigogo goal with 13 days to go, is the first product by Zivix that aims to make music education and composition far easier than on a normal guitar. Not unlike the GTar, the Jamstik outputs MIDI signals as you play. However, instead of electrical connections with the strings the Jamstik uses IR sensors to “see” where your fingers are on the fretboard, allowing for tricks like string bending and hammer-ons and -offs.
The new prototypes have full MIDI over WiFi support, allowing you to connect to an iOS device completely wirelessly. The Jamstik actually creates its own ad hoc network with your device, allowing you to maintain a connection to your favorite audio program without having to connect cables. In the demo I saw today the Jamstik maintained a solid connection for most of an hour and, using Audiobus, you could transmit audio from one program to another, allowing for some amazing mixed MIDI and audio recordings.
The company plans to go into production in 30 days and they have 17 days left on their Indiegogo campaign. The device itself is $ 299 and the company is in talks to get it into retail stores in Q4 for general consumers. It’s an exciting time to be a musician, that’s for sure.

Nokia Lumia 925 leaked in low-res press shot
If you’re looking for details, you might be disappointed. We don’t know much about the alleged Nokia Lumia 925 pictured above, other than its rumored codename: Catwalk. We probably don’t have too much longer to wait for a full spec list, however, with the company hosting a launch event in London tomorrow. The relatively low-resolution press shot posted by @evleaks on Twitter shows a Windows phone with styling typical of the Lumia series. There does seem to be a slight taper toward the face of the device and we can report the headphone jack appears to be on the top edge. Otherwise, we’re as in the dark as you are. But just stay patient — all will be revealed tomorrow.

Foursquare’s website now lets you sort businesses by price, hours and check-ins
Yelp users have enjoyed advanced sorting for years, but as Foursquare grows beyond basic tips and incentivized check-ins, such search filters are making their way to that site, too. Today’s announcement details a few handy additions, enabling you to locate businesses by price range, available specials and hours of operation. If you’re willing to sign into the service, you’ll see a few more options pop up, letting you find both new haunts and places you’ve saved, along with your friends’ favorite locales. The Foursquare team promises to release more options in the future, and while these latest tools are only available on the company’s website today, they should be hitting your smartphone soon.
