Netgear’s NeoTV Pro HD Media Streamer Can Throw Your Laptop Content To Your TV… Wirelessly
Streaming media players are no joke. In fact, cable has become the joke. Just take a look at this “Shit Silicon Valley Says” video — the first joke is, “are you cancelling cable?”
But at the moment, it’s still difficult to do so. You can’t get everything that you could possibly want through a streaming set-top box. The only place you can get everything you want is on the TV, or (cough cough illegally) on the internet. But what if you could get everything a streaming media player has to offer, like Netflix, HuluPlus, etc., but also wirelessly stream all of the content on your laptop to your big screen TV?
That’s clearly the question Netgear asked itself before building the NeoTV Pro HD streaming media player, which is one of the only media players on the market that can wirelessly stream your laptop display up onto your television screen. Of course, there are some limitations, as you’ll need an Intel-based Wireless Display laptop to play along. Sorry Mac users.
Past that, there are plenty of channels offered through the NeoTV Pro HD, including Netflix, HuluPlus, YouTube, Amazon Video, and Vudu and hundreds more. It also comes with built-in 300Mbps Wifi, an Ethernet port, and supports 1080p HD video resolution.
You’ll be able to download an iOS or Android app that will let you control the media player straight from your smartphone. And if you don’t have a smartphone, a regular remote comes in the box.
The NeoTV Pro HD is available now for $ 69.99.

Samsung becomes a Platinum-level Linux Foundation member, open-source gets a Korean accent
Samsung’s business virtually revolves around open-source code and Linux, both through obvious software like Android and Tizen as well as behind-the-scenes code for TVs and even home appliances. It almost shouldn’t be a surprise, then, that the company just became a Platinum-level member of the Linux Foundation, giving it much more control over how the platform advances. The favor is being returned in kind, both through a $ 500,000 cash injection as well as a Samsung pledge to become a better open-source neighbor. Any long-term plans of Samsung’s are being kept under wraps, but going to the Platinum tier puts it at a rare level enjoyed only by the likes of core Linux supporters like IBM, Intel and Oracle — it’s even higher than Google.

Visa exclusivity agreement forces the closure of 27 ATMs at the London Olympics

If you’re heading to the London Olympics this summer, you might want to make sure you have cash ahead of time — thanks to Visa’s exclusive sponsor status, 27 ATMs at the nine various Olympics venues around London will be shut down. In their place will be eight Visa ATMs that won’t work with Mastercard or other card providers. Of course, almost 97 percent of debit cards in use in the UK are Visa cards, but the reduction in available machines is an inconvenience no matter how you slice it. That’s without mentioning the many foreign tourists who might not be as Visa-heavy as the UK populace. At least the machines won’t charge a fee to users, like many of the machines being replaced. London’s Payment Council (in charge of UK payment…

OmniVision’s 12.7-megapixel OV12830 can shoot 24 fps photo bursts from your smartphone
OmniVision has been on a bit of a tear introducing new mobile camera sensors this week, and its newest could well have the biggest impact on smartphones in the next year. The OV12830′s 12.7 megapixels don’t make it as dense as the 16-megapixel sensors we’ve seen, but it makes up for that with some mighty fast still photography. As long as the attached phone can handle it, the CMOS sensor can snap full-resolution photos at 24 frames per second, or the kind of relentless shooting speed that would make One X and Galaxy S III fans happy. The same briskness musters 1080p video at 60 fps, even with stabilization thrown in. Production won’t start until the fall and likely rules out a flood of 12.7-megapixel phones and tablets until 2013, but the OV12830′s dead-on match for the size of current 8-megapixel sensors gives it a good shot at becoming ubiquitous — and guarantees that phones won’t need a giant hump on the back for a higher resolution.

Computer science professor wants to use online polling in Vermont Senate

Much has been made of various politicians’ use of new media, but Professor Jeremy Hansen hopes to incorporate direct internet-based democracy into a run for the Vermont State Senate. Hansen, who will announce his independent run for a seat representing Washington County on Thursday, is proposing an online and physical system of representation that will “allow for easy and ongoing participation by all citizens.” If elected, he says he would implement a system he calls “direct representational democracy,” which would include monthly public meetings and a “recall contract” that would require him to step down if his constituents felt he was not accurately representing them.
Most interesting, though, is Hansen’s proposal for internet-based…

Windows Phone Tango: lower cost, fewer capabilities

Microsoft revealed Windows Phone Tango at MWC 2012 as a version of the operating system for low-cost devices with 256MB of RAM. The update was good news for owners of early Windows Phone devices that didn’t meet the minimum requirements for Mango, but there have been a few hiccups. Microsoft said that not all apps in the Windows Phone Marketplace would work on devices with only 256MB of memory, and there have since been issues with Angry Birds and Skype, just to name a couple.
