Watch this: a documentary about culture and code shot on the Kinect

We wrote a few weeks back about the amazing artwork being done by the team at RGB+D. These hacker-slash-artists have combined Microsoft’s Kinect with a DSLR camera to create stunning photos and video that capture people through space and time in ways very different from a traditional film. The clip released today is a preview of a full length documentary featuring “hackers and media artists discussing culture, code and the future of visualization.” Check out the work by James George, Alexander Porter and Jonathan Minard below.

CompuLab to serve fanless AMD PC-3′s stuffed with minted penguin
With the Ubuntu variant Mint roaming free as one of the more attractive Linux breeds, why not lock it up in its own mini-case? That’ll happen soon thanks to mintBox, a joint venture with CompuLab, which will put the OS in two of its fanless PC-3‘s — the T40N and T56N — priced at $ 476 and $ 518, respectively. That might seem steep for the tiny 6 x 6 x 1-inch AMD G-series boxes, but with a Radeon HD 6290 APU and USB 3.0 / eSata ports, power is above par for its class. CompuLab will give some of the proceeds to Mint’s team, so if you maybe want to throw some cash at the so fresh, so clean Linux distro, hit the source for more details.

BlackBerry PlayBook Update Adds Improved Android Compatibility
The RIM PlayBook by just received a developers update that adds some interesting new Android functionality to RIM’s tablet. This new version now supports Android apps running in their own windows, improving compatibility with the general Android app universe.
From Crackberry:
Portrait support for Email, Calendar and Contacts
Improved folder support including IMAP folder support
Full device encryption is now supported, so that the whole device and personal partition can be secure.
Screenshots are now saved in lossless PNG format.
Each Android app will now run in its own window. This greatly improves the user experience and consistency among the other application runtimes.
Access to the Camera hardware is now supported for Android apps, allowing many more application types to work on the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet.
In-App Payment is now supported through the BlackBerry Payment SDK, so Android applications can include virtual items for sale in their applications.
This version is butting up against the incoming BB10 OS that will soon appear on phones and tablets, but, as the Verge notes, the BB10 PlayBook should be able to run apps written for previous OS versions.
Oddly, this version seems like a bit of a dead end but it’s nice to see Android functionality getting fleshed out more concretely.

Sony Smartwatch update speeds apps across the board, makes sure you (always) know what time it is
If you’d picked up a Sony Smartwatch, you might have noticed that some apps plod along; not anymore, courtesy of a just-posted update: third-party apps, the music jukebox and weather should all be speedier. Sony has also fixed the watch face — a slightly important part of a watch — to keep it always visible whether or not the device is in standby mode. Similarly, if you use the Smartwatch for exercise, you’ll be glad to know that Endomondo’s tracker app has now received Sony’s seal of approval as a watch companion. Hit the Google Play link below if you can’t wait to get moving, but you’ll get a heads-up from the Android app in the days ahead if there’s no rush.

RIAA thinks Google isn’t doing enough to stop online piracy

Google recently added piracy “Removal Requests” to its Transparency Report, and in doing so it has provoked a rather fiery response from the RIAA. On its blog, the RIAA complains about how Google’s takedown limitations — 1,000 links per request and a limited number of requests per day — fails to address the scope of music piracy on the search engine.
At face value, the RIAA’s complaints seem in line with the company’s motivations, but as Nate Anderson of Ars Technica points out, there are several companies that request far more takedowns than the RIAA. This disparity indicates that there’s not so much a problem with Google’s system as there is a desire within the RIAA to be given the ability to pull infringing sites at its sole…

MSI GT70 gaming laptop kindly updated with GeForce GTX 675M graphics
We sure hope you like surprises, because we’ve got a good one for you. It seems as if MSI wasn’t quite pleased with the killer graphics on its feature-loaded GT70 laptop and decided to give it a quick boost. Earlier today, the outfit announced its fresh gaming machine will now ship with NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 675M GPU instead of that already powerful GTX 670M found in our review unit. MSI says the change was driven by the company’s beliefs that “exceptional performance starts with outstanding components,” and, needless to say, we’re certain you’d agree. In case you’ve yet to grab one of these for yourself, you can do so at the source below.

Fly Or Die: HTC Evo 4G LTE [TCTV]
I’m smack dab in the middle of my HTC Evo 4G LTE review (the full review will be up tomorrow), but as I judge, I felt the need to bring John Biggs into the mix for a little Fly or Die.
Now, John is notoriously hard on Android phones, namely because they’re all incredibly similar. The Evo 4G LTE is no different. I, on the other hand, think it brings some pretty strong design language to the table, which could be great for someone looking to stand out.
I’m impressed with how comfortable the 4.7-inch 720p display is on the phone — usually that’s much bigger than I like (perfect “that’s what she said” moment, since you can’t say it yourself). But despite the fact that I threw out 25GB of free Dropbox storage, Beats Audio, and HTC’s Sense overlay, John still could not be impressed.
And to be honest with you guys, neither could I. Evo is a huge name to Sprint customers, but the yellow carrier has beefed up its offerings to now include the Galaxy Nexus and the iPhone 4S. Those are major competitors, which should crowd the shelves that the Evo line once dominated.
Dies across the board.
