The Narwhal Bacons On Your Phone: BaconReader Is A Reddit Reader For Android

icon-512x512

Folks who use iOS devices can enjoy the fine, fresh flavor of Reddit any time day or night with the official Reddit app. But what about Android users? What are they, chopped bacon?

BaconReader is a new Android reader produced by OneLouder. It is, as you’d expect, heavily text-based but it allows you to view your own account and submit news to Reddit as well as browse image links like a champ.

Why Conde Nast doesn’t have their own iReddit version for Android is beyond me, but there you have it. The free version includes ads but you can upgrade to ad-free for $ 1.99. Most important is this simple line that many wouldn’t notice in the product description and that I think shows the care and diligence these folks put into the app.

- Rageface and look of disapproval support

There are plenty of Android Reddit readers out there but this one looks to be a bit more polished, with color coded comment threads and full inbox support. Sure, it may not get you a date with I_am_the_cheese or highlight stuff that’s already been on 4chan, but it’s a native Android Reddit client and I’m sure it will go more than OK.

You’re Cooking My Meat!: Wi-Fi Destroys Sperm

wifi-sperm-killer.jpg

As a guy who spends 10+ hours a day with a laptop resting on his already unimpressive genitals, this is pretty serious news. Kidding, I can’t have children. Get it? Women just find me so unattractive! I touched a titty one time but it was a friend of my older sister and I think she just felt bad for me. Plus she had this giant f***ing mole on her neck with a FOREST of black hair growing out of it so she wasn’t exactly a fairytale princess herself. Wi-Fi: it’s frying your sperms, homey.

The study, published in the journal Fertility and Sterility, collected sperm samples from 29 healthy men, aged 26 to 45. Each of the samples were then separated into two pots.

One set of samples was placed beneath a laptop connected to the internet via Wi-Fi as it downloaded information, while the other set was stored under identical conditions – including temperature – but away from the computer.

Around 25 per cent of the sperm in samples exposed to the laptop stopped swimming compared with 14 per cent of those kept away from the computer.

Similarly around nine per cent of the sperm exposed to the laptop showed DNA damage compared with three per cent in the control samples.

Whatever, I’m tired of caring. Everything is either killing you or destroying your nuts, okay? Especially if it’s fun or you enjoy doing it. Except sex. Sex is actually healthy. What’s wasn’t healthy was the time I was putting the toilet seat down and sitting simultaneously and accidentally crushed my peen between the seat and bowl. IT MADE F***ING SOUNDS. Like Rice Crispies right after you add milk.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime review

Is there any tablet that’s hotter than the Transformer Prime right now? (Please, don’t say the Kindle Fire.) For weeks we geeks, early adopters and people who love their tech toys have been awaiting this, and none too patiently. Make no mistake: this will be one of the slickest products we test this year and it isn’t just because the original Transformer had such an inventive design. The Prime is the first device packing NVIDIA’s hot-off-the-presses Tegra 3 SoC, making it the world’s first quad-core tablet. This comes with promises of longer-than-ever runtime and blazing performance (five times faster than Tegra 2, to be exact), all wrapped in a package measuring just 8.3mm (0.33 inches) thick — even skinnier than the iPad 2 or Galaxy Tab 10.1. Throw in specs like a Super IPS+ Gorilla Glass display, eight megapixel rear camera and a confirmed ICS update in the pipe and even we seen-it-all Engadget editors were drooling.

All of which means we dropped just everything when a 32GB Prime showed up on our doorstep earlier this week, and soon enough, you’ll have your chance to nab one too. ASUS announced today that the WiFi-only models will be available through online sellers the week of December 19th, and in retail the week after. (No word yet on 3G versions for the US just yet.) It’ll start at $ 499 for the 32GB model — not bad considering five hundred bucks is the going rate for a high-end tablet with 16GB of storage. From there you can get a 64GB number for $ 599, while that signature keyboard dock will set you back a further $ 149. Worth it? Read on to find out.

TechCrunch Gadgets Webcast: The Standing Desk

This week we bring you the Fujifilm X10, the Galaxy Tab 8.9, and my new standing desk. The standing desk, incidentally, is my second desk, which puts me firmly in the 1% camp when it comes to home workstations.

I write a little about my standing desk here but generally it’s a FREDRICK desk from Ikea set up so I have my keyboard and mouse at waist level and monitor by my head.

We also talk about Devin’s favorite camera this week, the Fujifilm X10, and my favorite Android tablet this week, the Galaxy Tab 8.9. I’ve included MP3 downloads and RSS feeds for your listening pleasure.

Apple II drum sequencer surfaces for chiptune composers

No, this isn’t a recycled news item from the 1980s — it’s 2011, and MJ Mahon and 8 Bit Weapon have just announced the release of the Apple II DMS Drummer, a wavetable-based drum sequencer for Apple II-era machines. The monophonic synth reproduces eight drum sounds like bass, snare, rim shot, hand clap, tom, hat open, hat closed and “lazer,” along with a sequencer that lets you plug in up to 16 drum patterns across 256 slots. Seems like just the thing for chiptune composers hankering for a way to make authentic eight-bit drum tracks using vintage Apple hardware. System requirements call for an Apple IIe, IIc, IIc+ or IIgs with 80-column capability and a 5.25-inch floppy drive — you know, pretty modern stuff. A limited demo version is available, but if that doesn’t satisfy, you can either buy it on a floppy for $ 14.95 or download a .dsk disk image for $ 9.95. Oh, and neither require a time-traveling DeLorean to go back to 1985.

[Thanks, Seth]

Windows Phone 7.5 update now available for Dell Venue Pro owners

Dell Venue Pro

Microsoft announced on Wednesday that it is now delivering the Windows Phone 7.5 “Mango” update for Dell Venue Pro owners.

The software giant has started to deliver the Windows Phone 7.5 update to AT&T Dell Venue Pro owners.”If you (or friends or family members) haven’t installed the update yet, now’s the perfect time,” said Microsoft’s Eric Hautala, in a blog post on Wednesday. Microsoft revealed in late October that it is delivering Windows Phone 7.5 to 100% of eligible devices. Microsoft is also continuing to issue firmware specific updates to existing devices. “We’re also continuing to deliver occasional firmware updates to specific Windows Phone models and carriers around the world,” said Hautala. “Firmware updates are designed to improve your phone’s performance. If one is available for your phone, you’ll see an update notification pop up.”

Microsoft is also distributing the Windows Phone 7740 update to some existing devices. The new Windows Phone 7740 build update brings the operating system version up to 7.10.7740.16 and appears to be available for a variety of devices. Build 7740 addresses some issues with Microsoft Exchange 2003 and a voicemail notification problem:

  • Fixes an email issue related to Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. With this fix, when you reply to or forward a message, the original message is now included in your response.
  • Fixes a voicemail notification issue

Vodafone, Orange and Deutsche Telekom customers in Europe have started to receive the update already. The Windows Phone service release, called 7740, addresses an important issue with new voice mail notifications not appearing for customers on some European and Asian networks. The usual Windows Phone 7.5 firmware updates are also rolling out to select devices. Nokia is pushing its 7740 update in the coming days to address a battery problem with the Lumia 800 after it fully discharges. Nokia is also planning a second update to improve battery issues in early 2012.. A range of other firmware updates are also available for HTC devices. The HTC Mozart and HD7 both received updates recently to enable the Internet Sharing feature of Windows Phone 7.5.
