Samsung Starts Production In New OLED Display Factory

Despite Samsung’s ongoing patent tiff with Apple, the South Korea-based manufacturer had good reason to celebrate this Memorial Day weekend, as its long-awaited 5.5-Gen OLED display factory is starting production. Many thought that factory production would be delayed after the devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in March, but Samsung managed to get its new factory up and running two months ahead of schedule.
The new factory will manufacture much larger glass substrate sheets with an initial capacity of 24,000 per month. The factory will build up output throughout 2012, which should make AMOLED screens more cost-competitive. Samsung’s new factory can also employ the laser-based LITI production method, which will make high-res AMOLED displays (300ppi) more wallet-friendly per panel.
This is certainly good news to Samsung, whose Galaxy S II smartphone is basically flying off shelves. Hopefully the new factory will be able to keep up with the serious demand for the ultra-popular second-gen Galaxy smartphone, especially since the Galaxy S III is likely already in the works.

Captain’s Orders: When Captain Jean-Luc Picard Says Engage, You Better Say Yes!

How cute is that? “Super cute.” And this picture of a sleepy kitten on top of a sleepy puppy? “Also cute.” Aaaaaaaaand what about this? “WHAT THE F*** IS THAT?!” Haha, that’s a picture I found online of a rash that closest resembles mine. Well — what’s your professional opinion? “Looks like Mars but…” But on a ballsack?! Because that’s exactly what it feels like too.

Roku brings casual gaming to its internet TV platform starting with Angry Birds this summer

Roku’s line of boxes have come a long way from being used only to stream Netflix, and now the company has announced a plan to take its talents to casual gaming. Naturally, the first app out of the gate this summer will be the wildly popular and increasingly ubiquitous Angry Birds. There’s not a lot of details available yet and while we’re told the gaming experience will be available on a new player launching this summer, whether or not the existing Roku hardware will get any gaming action remains to be seen. Roku CEO Anthony Wood is very excited about the company’s gaming prospects saying “Just as we were the first to enable Netflix to stream instantly to the TV, we intend to be the catalyst for transforming the way people play casual games-starting with Angry Birds-on the biggest screen in the home”. While we wouldn’t bet against the upstart media streamer maker, it may be a bit tougher to compete with Xbox 360, PS3 and whatever Nintendo has up its sleeve on their native turf.

TDK Shows Off Transparent Bistable OLED Mobile Display

The transparent display wars are yet to begin, since everyone is still prepping their devices, but that doesn’t stop the big guys like TDK and Samsung from throwing a little PR party every once in a while to let you know they’re still on the task. Today TDK released info on a new display, the UEL476, that’s a bit different from the rest.
Many of the transparent displays we’re seeing are AMOLEDs; this one is a “PMOLED,” utilizing a passive matrix instead of an active one. It’s similar to the way e-ink works, but still requires power to fluoresce, so don’t go expecting month-long battery life on these things. But for color e-readers the tech could result in some serious power savings.
Will we see this screen on any devices soon? I doubt it. It’s too small for most consumer devices, and AMOLED is more than likely the next generation of small displays. But TDK is a big company and this is just the tip of the iceberg — a photo-ready version of something that has a dozen other variants. We’ll hear about more soon enough.

Memorex intros Nintendo DS game-changing case, other not-so-game-changing accessories

The Nintendo DS line has had many redesigns up to the present 3DS, but one thing that hasn’t changed are the tiny, easily lost cartridges. Enter Memorex’s $ 20 Universal Game Selector Case, announced as part of its gaming accessory lineup for E3. The UGSC stores up to three games and hooks up to the cartridge port on any DS, letting you swap between them using a signal routing switch. We’ve seen cases similar to this in the past, but Memorex’s take is the first to support 3DS titles as well. Based on the renders, the unit looks to make for a weird fit and some noticeable extra thickness (10.5mm to be exact), especially on the DSi XL, but hopefully we’ll get a better idea of how it feels in hand at E3. From a functionality perspective, the case does seem rather useful for those with forgetful tendencies, if a bit underwhelming for anybody else. Memorex will also be displaying its new third-party PS3 and Wii motion controllers at the E3, which are viewable in the gallery below, and there’s a press release with details after the break.

Google: Chrome OS Only For Notebooks Right Now
Although we recently heard tell of a touchscreen-based test platform called Seaboard running Chrome OS, Google isn’t in a hurry to acknowledge that its browser OS is coming to tablets. I can’t blame them, either — with Android numbers increasing and Chrome OS unproven, it’d be foolish to dilute the market with a second tablet ecosystem. So they’re officially limiting it to Chromebooks for now.
Speaking at Computex in Taipei, Google’s Sundar Pichai said:
Chrome OS is a computer model designed with various form factors in mind, but we are entirely focused on the notebook form factor for now. We have no other plans at this time.
The touchscreen testbed seems to contradict that statement, but at a big company like Google they’re definitely thinking and testing months and years ahead of time, so “no other plans” really just means “plans could change.”
Once they roll out Chrome OS in earnest, though, I think we’ll see an understandable divide between it and Android. It’ll take a while and both products continue to evolve, though, so let’s just wait and see.

T-Mobile USA to launch HTC Sensation on June 15, hits Wal-Mart ‘as early as June 12′

The foremost question in the hive mind of Android power users these days is typically whether to go with HTC’s 1.2GHz, dual-core, 4.3-inch Sensation or the similarly specced Galaxy S II from Samsung. Of course, neither of those is actually out in the US yet, so if patience is not your favorite virtue, T-Mobile just made that decision for you. The carrier has announced it’ll start selling the HTC Sensation from June 12th at Walmart stores, after which it’ll be “exclusively” available on June 15th from T-Mobile retail stores. Think about it. Samsung’s superphone shouldn’t be too far behind, but it does look like T-Mo subscribers will get a good few weeks to familiarize themselves with Sense 3.0 before having to hear any gloating about Super AMOLED Plus displays and 8.49mm slimness. PR after the break.
